Heated hand grips

Now we've hit a cold spell I've started to use these for the first time this year - and been disappointed! Even on the highest setting they don't appear to be getting that warm - certainly not as hot as my old air cooled GSA. Anyone else experiencing similar problems or know of any cures?
 
I think a lot depends on how much airflow you have over your hands, because even though heated grips warm your palms, the slight movement of your hands on the grips in the airflow will stop the heating elements from having much effect. Mine were ok-ish in the first cold weeks of winter, but I have now fitted Barkbuster Blizzards which are awesome. I've worn my summer perforated gloves many times in the last month of sub 5 degree temperatures with heated grips on, and with normal 3-season gloves I don't bother with the heated grips after the first couple of miles because the Blizzards are so good.
 
mine were the same ..i have a 2015 model bought in sept .i spoke to the service tech and he said theres a software update that can be done ..so the bike went in ,takes an hour and bingo .nice toasty warm grips
 
Known for quality paint, chrome and longevity BMW were also world leaders in fitting heated Grips, some of the best I have ever had on a bike. Sadly the skills to make these simple devices work is now beyond BMWs ability.
To have any benefit from the grips I use a secondary deflector (Givi) fitted to the almost useless hand guards, and have no linings in my gloves. I fit silk inner gloves when riding sub zero. You can feel some heat but nothing like the pre 2000 grips.
 
I have a September 2013 and the heat levels on mine are shite ! On the highest setting they just get warm, that's with the bike idling inside a garage with the door open. On the road in these temperatures they would be useless.

I previously had Oxford heated grips on 2 bikes and they were hot.

These are truly not fit for purpose but what can you do ?

Bike went in for a second 600 mile service a few months ago and was told that the bike
"took" on software updates. Presumably if any heated grip updates were available then it would have got them ?

Would a dealer be able to tell me over the phone if it was done by looking on his computer records ?
 
And curiously in the owners handbook they tell you to only use the highest setting to warm the grips and you should then revert to lower setting!

Strangely, I always think the left grip is cooler than the right - it was the same on my R1200R. Probably my circulation.

The grips on my 1997 R850R were as poor as the ones on my 2014 GS (both fitted with handguards).

Those on my 2006 K1200S, 2009 GS and 2012 RT were, on the other hand, too hot to use on the high setting except at high speeds in very cold temperatures and very warm on the low setting

I'm hoping the alleged software update cures the problem as they're £200 wasted at the moment :anger:
 
Likewise to the above, mine are still no better despite a so called software upgrade. Even had a heat sensor test thingy on the grips and they are up to the required temp whatever that is.

My left feels slightly cooler than the right one, same as on my ex 2013 lemon GS, I just dont get why I can ride a 2014 F800 / S1000 / a WC RT and all of those grips are brilliant compared to this newer GS variant. The RT I took out recently was great - I even had to turn the setting down - they were as effective as on the pre WC RT's.
 
I was thinking of buying the Touratech handguard extensions, anyone tried them?
 
I think that the Heated Grips were hotter on my TC than my LCADV

Added them to my GS and they seem to have little or no effect I'm afraid - outside of hands are just as cold.

The right hand grip sits on a the plastic throttle tube, I'm assuming it's plastic or nylon (basically not metal), the left hand grip is straight onto the metal bar. That's the difference and seemingly no compensation for this taken into account by BMW.

Mine are shite and Balderstones said nothing can be done.
 
Put muffs on the handlebars. Low heat, summer gloves, nice and toasty. Ok it looks shite, but warm digits are better than being cold and looking cool.
 
Thanks to all. Bikes in for a 12k service in Jan so I'll ask Vines for a software update and see what happens - nothing ventured nothing gained I suppose. failing that I'll clearly need to revert to some old fashion winter warmers - like bar muffs.
