Heated hand grips

I spoke to a dealer in Nederland today
He said as from august 2014 the grips have changed (different part number) and 5ohms he could not tell me how many ohms the old ones were.

The grips have changed as mentioned earlier in the thread, but the bars are identical and BMW are claiming that the bars are operating as a heat sink.

Just put a multimeter on a 2014 March grip. Answer 8.1 ohms,
So if the new grips are 5ohms that would give about 1.6 times the heat output on max setting.
So the current would be uped from 1.5A to 2.4A

Asked BMW for their official figures on 12-14-15 year models for their heated grips, do not want to seem to give them to me !! wonder why. All I want to know is the max temp the grips should work at so that we can compare the difference between the grips and get BMW to explain why the 14 grips are 15-20 degrees cooler than the others.

And the 13 grips, mine are totally useless on two dots and I don't know why one dot exists at all.

OK if the new grips are 5.5 ohms and are supplied by 12v then they are 26 watts.

I've just opened my 2014 right grip and it's 8 ohms so only 18 watts. This makes the new type 45% more powerful.

Got access to a computer for a few going home next week... Stop reinventing the wheel.. Bars the same , wiring loom the Sam e, connections the same.ONLY difference is the grips.. See above .....Get 2 people one with a 14 and one with a 15 takes 10 minutes to switch a grip..... Do it and you will find the TRUTH... And see all the BS BMW has given you and the dealers..... your making the above sound simple ,and it does sound obvious, But if the 2015 carrys more current (45%) does it not need heavier wiring or larger connectors to deal with that ?

Only if the existing wiring / connectors are rated for 1.5A but not for 2.4A. I'd guess that standard wiring parts would be fine at the higher current, but my guess is of course worth what you paid for it...

Is there anyone out there who has a 15 bike who is willing to let me swap the grips to see if they will work on a 14 bike so that we can get to the bottom of all this bullshit which BMW keep on dishing out.

I can come to you or if you want you can come to my workshop, will even treat you to a cup of tea or coffee.

I am in the Ilkeston area but will travel if any one willing to help.

Ok - my May 2014 GSA went to Pidcocks this morning to see if they could improve the effectiveness of the heated grips. As others - they work but do not get very hot.

They confirmed that the 2015 grips will not work on earlier bikes as a result of the software. So whilst they will almost certainly fit physically there would I assume be issues with them being compatible with the bikes electrics/ECU.

What they did do was a "forced software update" - no idea what this really means but I think it is a way of bypassing some of the currents bikes software for the heated grips

What I can report is that on the 6 mile drive home, the grips on the highest setting were significantly hotter and if I had been going any further, I would have had to turn them down to the lower setting

Will reserve full judgement until I have managed to do an extended test of them but happy so far

Doesn't the update just stop them switching to low power mode when the revs drop below a certain level?

I thought a number of members had already had this done and it made no difference?

Just to say I'm not being an arse There's just been a lot of going round in circles, including a member who's had 2015 grips fitted to his 2014 bike and they work.
