Hi folks
went to get a helicoil kit for a job on the bike 6x1mm for the head guard ( 1200 gsa ) I was suprised that the insert was only about 8mm deep , I thought it would be the length of the hole

I'm not surprised. At 8mm it is 133% of the bolt diameter, which is more than a standard m6 nut. Don't worry, it will be fine, and having some clearance at the bottom of the hole will make fitting it easier.

You can get different lengths of insert.

They are measured by the diameter 1d= 6mm 1.5d=9mm etc.
