helmet noise

im looking to buy a new skid lid but want to go for one with low wind noise is there any statistics about this subject that anyone out there knows about or any that you guys can recommend i would use ear plugs but would like to use autocoms

Get some Ear Plugs with speakers....sorted!

Then you can go for the helmet you want with out worrying about the noise level.

I tried on a Schuberth at the NEC show, it was like having ear-plugs in, very quiet but I don't know what it would be like on the road. My Arai is quiet until moving then there's all sorts of whistling from the gimmicky vent systems.

My Schubert is noisy, I recently removed the leather chin gaurd, little difference to wind noise, however due to the increased ventilation its solved my fogging problems

I would not recommend Schubert at all and especialy if you are after quiet...

Which Schuberth do you have Richie? They claim to have addressed the problem with the C2 and S1.

SHOEI - quietest lids on the market IMO - also light. Wide range of prices - all good. I don't use flip-ups - there may be different opinions/issues surrounding those.

What CC said......get some earplug monitors and it all becomes irrelevant, and you'll never have to put up with crap music or not quite being able to hear your pillion through helmet speakers again.

There's Green leopard, and there are several G.L franchise chappies here who you could speak to, or there's Ultimate Ear....contact through the button at the top of the screen.

Don't know about G.L myself, but I've not heard anything bad about them here, but Ultimate ear are very good, and well known on the board.

Shenzi, I think the lid is crap... Have always said so, but I am very rare as most think they are great...

Buy one try it if O.K. buy the other. I presume One for you and one for the other half.

If you don't like it you can, always sell it... If you buy two thats more money wasted and harder to sell...

The BMW Sport Integral helmet at £185 ish rates as 86db making it one of the quietest out there. This is a non flip front helmet.
By comparison my EVO4 BMW system helmet is rated at 91db, which is actually twice as loud as the Sport Integral. The new System 5 will also be 86db, as BMW recognise noise and deafness is a problem that all helmet makers need to address.

Ear Plugs are the obvious answer and you don't have to go to the expense of monitors for intercom.

Don't know if Ultimate Ear do them, but Green Leopard will do a standard ear plug with a specially designed filter to let directional noise in from standard helmet speakers.

For the record I have the (noisy) Schubert Concept helmet and can have perfectly clear conversations at motorway speeds (even German mororway speeds!) through my Autocom with standard solid Green Leopard plugs. I tried the filtered versions for music (which worked pretty well) but ended up with monitors too.

My advice would be buy a helmet based on fit and comfort and buy some solid ear plugs. If you can't hear as much as you want Green Leopard will retro-fit your plugs with filters. If that still isn't enough go for the monitors.

Correct, we both like the drop down sun visor. The next quiet helmet I have will be the first....had 'em all...Shoei, Arai, AGV etc.
Only ever had one helmet I really disliked and that was the AGV.

Still waiting for the new Schuberths to arrive in our local shop...we will see. If I like the C2 maybe then I can buy a pipe

I too tried the C2 at the NEC and found it very quiet. On the bike it suffers badly from wind noise. The only cure I've found so far is to open the visor slightly.

It also mists up quickly when stopped.

I wear a Shoei for work and find it to be a good quiet helmet. I wear a Roof ' Le mans' in my own time and find it to be just a quiet plus its half the price.

I have a Sport Integral and it's very quiet, though the front vent doesn't fit very well so 'whistles' a bit. My System 4 is quiet too, just very draughty. Mind you everything seems quiet after my last Arai Quantum F. I had to seal up the head vents with tape to los the higher frequency noise.

Suppose it's all down to the bike and screen position, My Shoei Z1 I thought was nice and quite when I got it and was riding the Fazer, seemed better on the GS with standard screen, but took the Fazer out for a spin on Saturday as was suprised at how noisy it was, whisteling away quite merrily, but still much better on the GS, so will be another Shoei when I decide to get another.

I've been wearing a Roof Diversion for a year now, and I find it relatively quiet, very comfy with good ventilation.
