Helmet peak

I've just seen an advert for an X-lite X551 helmet which has a peak and flip down sun visor.

So maybe there's another reason ? Or none at all ?

Both of the above. I really wished I'd been wearing a helmet with a peak this weekend. Riding into low sun, even with a dark tinted visor, can be a pain.

The Arai Tour X-3 peaks were specially designed by Ewan and the one-who-must-not-be-named to help keep all the film crew's lighting from burning their retinas out.

Obvious really when you think about it :blast

The peak is on 'adventure' helmets for the same reason that the beak is on 'adventure' bikes.

Most unusually, a serious reply!

On these helmets & bikes, which are a fashion statement, the peak serves no useful purpose.
However, the need originated in motocross, where, when you are following another rider up a muddy field, one tilts one's head down so that the peak keeps the clods out of your eyes, and maybe extends the cleanliness of the goggles a little.

not true.

they are very effective against low sun.

+1 :thumb2 You're not wrong there !

Maybe a nuisance at high speeds on a rice rocket but for up to 100mph there are no drawbacks.

I'm sure if Rossi wore one then a lot more 'road' bikers would get one and praise it's usefulness. However at his sort of speeds, they'd be a hindrance and so if you want to look like you go FAST, wearing one would prove you don't.

The fact that Charley "I did the Dakar" Boreman wears one and despite that, some of us still wear one means there must be a good reason to do so !

Off-road riders know it's a smart thing !

Helps to build up the neck muscles, especially looking left and right. Makes you look more manly :)

the vented one on my uvex doesn't do that like a tour-x does, but then again, it's not quite such a good sunshade :)
