Help!!! Bike Stopped... fuel pump?

Hi Guys really stuck went out for a ride today before I set off to Scotland tomorrow when the bike died... (It's an 1150 Adventure)

Engine just died as though kill switch had been knocked but when I tried to start it the engine turned over but wouldn't fire up, I can't hear the wirlling noise from the fuel pump so before I strip the Tank down and replace the fuel pump does anyone have any other ideas?. I've checked (visually) the fuses and swapped them all round but no change. Checked the wire block from the tank and it seams ok but going to check & clean it again.

Really hope i can get this fixed today :-(

Have you messed about with the fuel pipes? If so check they're all connected correctly. DAMHIK

as has been said, if the tanks been off of late, then one of the fuel disconnects may have poped off, check the simple first

The tank was taken off yesturday as I had the alarm re-fitted. but have ridden for about 50 miles before it died.

Checking the pipes they look fine but will do it again.

Currently testing the connector block from the pump bit confused though as it doesn't matter which wire I test on one end of the block all the wires at the other side are bleeping a circuit as though all are wired together even each half of the block. might be a red hearing though as it doesn't make sense and could be me testing

But if it is onje of the pipes, wouldn't I still hear the pump wherring when I switch on the ignition?

Try filling up with fuel, my symptoms only occurred after a fair distance.

mine popped out after a bike fell against mine, well it was about 150 miles after, once the tank level was lower

Do you still have RID display up or is that gone as well?

(Check side stand switch if not.....easy to bypass if necessary)

OK so maybe getting somewhere... side stand switch????

Only done 50 miles from a full tank.. not a good work around to fill it up every 50 miles

I'm sure my fuel level was a lot less, checked the kill switch then?

Yep.....have a look at the top of the side stand ...there's a switch that makes a circuit when the stand is up to allow power to get through......could be the switch needs cleaning, ot they can get knocked and displaced.

You can bypass it by connecting the two wires in the plastic connector that comes off the switch......or insert a bit of bare-ended wiress into the plug itself and reconnect the plug and socket.

Also check the fuses again....even if they appear OK....Fuse 3 (possibly 5) but one of those two.....change them for fresh ones, even if they read as not blown on a MM....for 20p it's a definite tick box against it being a fuse problem then

SO....start with stand, look at switch, clean and/or bypass it, then fuses

how about the side stand swich can I buy pass that and how?

Connector on left side of bike in sidepanel area 2 wires in there, put some thin copper wire in the connector and reconnect it (short circuited) my sidestand switch was an intermittent fault, try flicking stand up and down with ign on, you may hear things happening.

Well I have 3 wires for the side stand switch, red white and brown, I'm sure brown is earth but at the end of the day do all 3 need to be shorted looks like it int the wiring diagram so I've com in for some wire and pins and a beer it's flipping boiling out there

Red and white. (IIRC...check though!)

the SS switch is in series with kill switch, but it's more often the SS switch that goes 'cos it's more exposed (and hopefully it'll be that 'cos the kill switch is more tricky and a lot more expensive to deal with )

Going to mention the Hall Sensor...when mine started to go, the bike died, just like the kill switch had been hit. RID dead, etc. Worth checking. They can act funny before they go...

If the Hall switch goes, I think the fuel pump will still prime when you on the ign, nein?

This happened to me, it was the fuel pump relay that had blown. (£5.35 from BMW)

Well I think i can rule out the SS Switch when checked the circuit when ss is down 2 wires make a circuit and breaks as I lift the stand and then another pair make a circuit instead, Of course without knowing which wires to short can't bypass completly but I don't think it is.

Taken a spark plug out but it's bone dry and doesn't smell like it has fule going through...

So this is what happens....

Switch the ignition key on dash lights come on displaying battery light etc and the green neutral light. The RID lights up and displays the clock and the gear indicator "o" but doesn't display fuel or temp gauges but there is no noise from the fuel pump
Start the bike, it turns over fine but wont fire up and no noise from the fuel pump.

Now I presume if the it's the kill switch then it won't turn over??? can't remember

sounds like something is stopping the fuel pump from primeing?? so possibly not the pump
