Hi new to UKGSer as only had my 1150GS since February this year. I am facing an apparent £1500 bill for a new 'brake modulator' which I have been told by the dealer has failed, BWM do not seem interested in a 'gesture' - so does anyone have any advice on what the part is, is this something common and what my alternatives to shelling out are?
The bike is a 52 plate, done 28K with a full service history. I got it second hand in Feb on 24K and was doing up to 100 miles a day until it was off the road a while back. Basically coming up to traffic lights, all the lights lit up and only residual brakes, luckily it was uphill! Not happy and need help!:nenau

Unfortunately, if it is the servo unit you are talking about, they do go wrong. I had a '02 RT and the servo packed in at about 40k mls (I think). I was looking at a bill of €2500 but thankfully I had owned the bike from new and it was dealer serviced and BMW picked up the tab.

I read somewhere that it is possible to do away with the servo assist and ABS system and put in a traditional system, but I don't know anybody who has done this. There may be someone on this site who can advise.

Give our friends at Sherlocks or Motobins a call for a secondhand unit.

Alternatively, speak to the London one, who will surely have somekind of cheaper option to dispense.

Calling Mr Steptoe, you have people waiting :thumb

Cheapest bet is to ditch the servo pump, replumb the brake lines & go back to conventional brakes.

I would be livid if that were mine. 5 years old, 28k with a full service history!! Speaking to my local dealer a few weeks back, I voiced my concern that something like this might happen to mine as it's just out of warranty. "Don't worry" he said, "I've never known anyone pay for one yet, including an elderly 1100."
I would protest in the strongest possible terms, firstly that the dealer hasn't seemingly done enough/anything about a goodwill claim, and then via BMWs Customer Services Dept., stressing that this is supposed to be a premium product for which we certainly pay a premium price!

Thanks to everyone and UKGSer for helping a newbie. In reply to LittleRedRooster - I was - I did - Customer Services have promised to sort it.

Looking forward to being back on two wheels...:thumb
