Just about to load the Garmin onto PC - DVD player not working - it keeps making funny noise like it's catching but not spinning? Can I get an external DVD ROM or would I be cheaper getting the DVD unit repaired. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. It's a Compaq Pressario S3350UK Desktop model, about 4 years old and out of warranty.

Had thaat on my PC bought a new drive only to find out it was a problem that could be solved.

The drive kept on saying insert disc into drive when there was one in there. Have a look Here it may help.

*edit* and Here, removing the upper / lower filters worked for me. ;)

Don't bother with repair...

Take out old unit and replace with a new one. If it's a mechanical fault, you can't get a repair done for this price.

Or (better idea), replace it with a DVD-RW like this one.

Just remember to set the jumper to 'master' or 'slave', dpending on what you need.

DVD Rom still goosed.

Thanks for previous threads lads, but to no avail. I am so not computer minded. 'My Computer' has now lost it's 'F' Drive - DVD Rom. Any ideas without going into technician talk. How do you re-install things once you've un-installed them (if this makes sense) Slave & master - I've re-conneted plug that came out old dvd rom but there is another 'spare' plug. THe new driver is sticking and cd is not spinning. Any further help would be grately appreciated. Cheers.

No, Two plugs - 1 to the power & 1 to the interface, Thanks anyway.

Mondial When you fit a new drive, if it is the only DVD/CD drive in the machine the jumper which is situated on the back of the unit should be set to 'Master' it's a little plastic coated connector which bridges any 2 of 3 or 4 sets of double brass pins, most units will have an indication of wich pins represent Master, Slave or Cable select (CS).
The Grey ribbon which usually has a red line down one side, is pushed onto the pins with the red line closest to the power connector. It's some times possible to put this ribbon on the wrong way so just make sure the red line is next to the power connectors.
If you have two DVD/CD drives on one grey ribbon one must be set to Master and the other to Slave, the slave drive connects to the middle connector of the ribbon and the red line rule applies here as well.
Hope that helps, it's an easy job to do once you 've done once.
