HELP!!!! Its broke

Was on my way this morning to spend a couple of weeks away! Then the momnt I have been dreading for a while my gs1200 decided to die in the middle lane.
There was no build up or any strange noises.

|The bike turns over but will not start. The RAC man checked for out put on injector wiring and spark plugs and there was. But when he tested the feed to the fuel pump which i'm persuming is in the tank? there was power to the module thingy on top (what does that do anyone??) but could not get a voltage when he tested the 2 feed that come of that, i persume to the fuel pump. Am i also right to say if the fuel feed was uncliped from the top of the tank i should get fuel being pump out when ingnition is on ???

Most likely culprit is the Fuel pump PLC a known failure point, disconnecting it will not do anything because the ECU will not sense the PLC is there so will shut off the device, recover to dealer is the solution.

A call from BMW Northampton todays to tell me that the fuel pump is Knacked.

My question is? as I'm a little pissed of as bike only run out of warranty last month...... should a fuel pump last longer ( bike done 22.000 miles ) ????? should I argue with bmw over this or should I pay the £200+ bill and get on with life

I would imagine that something can be negotiated as a goodwill gesture by BMW, assuming it has had all its services done appropriately. Thats the very least I would be hoping for.

I agree, but i would not be put off from making a claim even if it had not had all of its dealers services.
Not unless it is overdue from having its fuel filter replaced there are no servicable parts.
Make sure you get the part back from the dealer along with the fuel filter to return for claim, just in case it gets lost.
A fuel pump should last at least 100,000 miles

The bike has never missed a BMW service and never been overdue for one.

Do I complain when i go to pick the bike up or do I need to go to BMW head office after its been paid for and picked up?

What age is your bike? - I would guess mid 04 if the warranty has run out. The early ones (IIRC up to about Autumn 04) were very prone to this due to a poor seal on the housing on top of the tank. There was a recall to fit a different seal. Has yours had this recall done?

There don't seem to have been many failures since that was sorted out so I expect the new seal worked. So I reckon there are 2 possibilities: 1) the recall was not done; 2) the recall was done but the corrosion had already set in. In the case of 1), I would have thought there should be no problem in having it repaired at BM's/dealer expense. 2) is probably harder - certainly difficult to prove - but got to be worth a go at a goodwill gesture.

Of course, it may not be the "classic" fuel pump failure at all in which case all of the above is completely iuseless.

I got a phone call yesterday to tell me that the fuel pump was on order and should arive next day.

I was just about to bring up the hole thing of its not good anough and I shouldnt have to pay for this

And they supprisewd me buy asking me if you would like us to put a good will claim in! I said yes please

Phone call this morning to tell me the bike was all done and ready to go.
I ask how did the good will claim go! I supprissed to here the words there is nothing to pay!!

one Bike picked up this afternoon and very happy chap

PS.... Could of washed it for me bloody tossers

And my 1150 as well - I had the habit of running the tank right down and could often hear the pump whining. Bad thing to do - it ended seizing the pump and costing me a bloody fortune....

I never run the tank right down any more....
