Who is the go to GURU for this model BMW please? I have a cutting out problem that's becoming dangerous when slowing down at junctions or riding at low speed. Anyone out there know these bikes and have had similar problems and resolved them.
Bike runs fine when above idle, all codes read and cleared, just frustrating that every so often it just coughs and stalls or cuts out.
My wife has had a serious moment on it and is scared to death of it!
I desperately need an expert to attend to this issue. TIA

Hey,

I have the same bike. I'm not sure of your experience so please forgive me if I say anything obvious.

I've had this happen three times.

1. The battery was too low and it started fine but would struggle at slow speeds

2. My fuel strainer fell off inside the fuel tank which resulted in the bike stalling out of nowhere (only when hot). I could let it cool and it would work again.

3. I had not stalling but improved my throttle response after resetting the throttle somehow. There was a sequence of going from closed to full open three times while off, but I can't remember this one too well, might be less helpful.

The charging system on this bike is pretty bad, so after 30k miles your stator, regulator rectifier night be shot. I also had bad grounds that helped the charging system a lot after cleaning.

I had a gs800. Quite liable to stall on takeoff. Always wanted to fall over. JJH

When was it last serviced ? Have the plugs and air filter been changed. On my F650 twin I had the positive lead to post come loose. This led to intermittent starting and double sweeps of clock.
Motorevive on here knows the engines but I think he is on a round the world tour.

Yannick I think you area bit conservative with the stator failures. Sure these occur but usually on 70,000 miles plus engines. I hired a 110,000 mile bike in Spain. Its stator was replaced at 80,000 miles.

We have a long running thread on the issue, which you may have seen ........... https://www.ukgser.com/community/threads/►-unexpected-stalling-issue.98914/

Like many more modern bikes with little flywheel effect, that run ECO lean, they will stall out easily if you don't pick the revs up at junctions.

You don't mention service history, mileage or how the codes were checked , but I'm thinking this could be a dirty idle control valve or the ICV hose. Presumably you have checked the TPS calibration.

I had an ‘09 model from new for 10 years and 126,000 miles.

As has been mentioned above, check battery terminal tightness. Use a spanner as feeling finger tight is not necessarily tight enough. This would definitely be my first port of call.
If you haven’t accessed the battery on one of these before….you’ll soon come to hate it 😂

The stators on the earlier bikes can suffer due to the flywheel not having enough cooling holes. This was modified from 2013 onwards.
I suffered stator failure at around 50,000 miles, had a rewind, that failed at about 62,000 ish. Then I had the 2013 flywheel and stator fitted (expensive), no more problems.

The fuel pumps can be a weak point on the early bikes too. However, this normally only shows up with less than a quarter of a tank of fuel and with outside air temperatures of 35 degrees C plus.

Again, as has been mentioned already, where is the bike at re servicing??

Hey,

Yes you're likely right. The early engines have an unvented flywheel that didn't create enough cool down on the stator, so they're especially bad as you likely know. I probably got influenced by the threads that come up with people having these issues around this mileage, but they're most likely the exception to the rule.

Thanks for mentioning that. It reminded me what the third point was again.

The procedure is:

Turn the Ignition on without start the engine
Tist the throttle slowly from full off to full on and back three times
Turn the ignition off
Start the engine as normal

Or disconnect the battery for 15 minutes, if I remember well.

My wife had one from new in 2008,
After 3 or 4 instances of low speed stalls and dropping it twice we sold it.
Maybe nothing is actually wrong with it?
Maybe a remap could give it better low speed drivability?
Now yours is an opinion I value as you have worked on my BMW's before, as I don't have a facility to strip it or reconnect it to a Computer this is why I am seeking advice. The symptoms you describe are identical to this bike. 35,000 miles recently had a major service (in mileage) and a lot of new parts fitted. I experienced a heart stopping incident while in a Car Park two up when it just cut out and by sheer good luck I kept it upright as it went over at well below walking pace. A local owner who has the code reader did the investigations and found nothing stored or wrong. We both ride this and love it as it's a lightweight machine and is easy to maul about, unlike my 1200 and the R100's we own.

I desperately need an expert to attend to this issue. The Bike is a 2008, 35000 miles recent major service with several items replaced, Battery terminals are murder tight as I fitted a charging lead, heated suit plug and TomTom lead for the GPS. It runs faultlessly, just at low speed its a complete horror. TIA
