Help needed with importing routes basecamp/zumo 390

i plugged the unit into the mac and started Garmin Express and it said the maps needed updating, so i will try that

thanks again everyone

i think i have spent more time on this than i would actually riding any routes

well, to be fair, Basecamp is not the most intuitive of software to use and the fact that Garmin have the following software for the mac

Garmin BaseCamp
Garmin Express
Garmin MapInstall
Garmin MapManager
Garmin WebUpdater

..tends to suggest that Garmin really need to simplify things

And I have a degree in IT and I'm a professional pilot, so one would hope it would be simple-ish to use

if its leting you update, dont forget to install maps to computer as well as the nav.

Have you used the "new Style" OSM maps? Mine look like this and, since I use Mapsource I can easily adjust the level of detail easily. As a Mac user you are stuck with Basecamp, hopefully someone will come along and explain how you can adjust the level of detail in Basecamp

With updates available it should offer to install to device & computer at the same time in map options

To be equally fair, I am less blessed (no degree - not even a fourth in IT - and am an insurance clerk) but find it reasonably simple to use.

'Stuck', is an emotive word, given that BaseCamp works very well on a Mac. Leedude seems to work it very well on a Windows based PC, too. But hey...

I am away on a 19 night 'Lap of Germany' all the routes created / borrowed / stolen using BaseCamp and Garmin's own NavTec maps, on a Mac, without too much difficulty. The routes are all running on my bog standard BMW Navigator V (basic preference settings only, to avoid U-turns and unpaved roads) without a glitch. If I (with no IT degree and as someone does not understand one end off a root directory from another) can manage, any twit can.

From memory, when looking at the screen of a Mac running BaseCamp, there are two slider bars, down near the bottom of the screen.

1. The larger bar, zooms the map in and out

2. The smaller bar beneath increases / reduces the fine detail shown

You can also use the magnifying glass tool, to zoom into just a very specific area within a map.

Off course this presupposes that the owner of the Mac has the detailed maps installed / available / unlocked in the first place or they'll be zooming into the square root of feck all. It happens.

That's the basics done, without using the 'Find' function.

PS OSM (and other third party map providers) maps download, install and display easily on a Mac, running BaseCamp. Just as easily as they do in Mapsource on a PC. They also transfer just as easily from a Mac to a Garmin device as they do from a PC.

Ds99 Quote (i am amazed all this is so complicated, I mean, five separate pieces of Garmin mac software are now on my mac - that's insane) in all fairness its the same as any other piece of software i have had to use, it takes time to learn, and the same applies to the navs. for mac you should only need basecamp and express, but garmin in there wisdom seem to have altered the interface of express, and removed the ability to re install maps to computer, there is a thread on this here, http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showth...-BaseCamp-Garmin-Express-not-reading-SD-cards, have a read it gives a brief explanation, and maybe a workaround. The other problem that seems to be occuring more, is people buying second hand units with or without a map subscription, (lifetime or other) and then downloading basecamp or mapsource and expecting it to work, without having the maps installed on the PC or MAC, and then getting into a flap trying to make it work, now some who have purchased these second hand units may not have realised that a map was needed for their computer to fully utilise the capabilities of the said nav, and are either pissed off that they now have to buy another item (maps) to enable them to use this device to the full, or go about trying to download the maps, because their unit has lifetime maps, this is where the problem listed in the link above comes in.
So if you are thinking of buying or have bought one of these awesome garmin units be aware that this is not necessarily all you need and you may have to fork out more money to get maps, or end up using one of the many online maping sites that work along side of your nav, or as many have done, use osm maps.

Here's an email I got from Garmin UK Tech Support the other day.....

......."The zumo 400 and 500 series, 550, 600, and 665 series, which the BMW devices are based on, are NOT compatible with routing in BaseCamp. These devices may appear to take a route without issue however, when navigating the route, an error message may appear. An alternate program to use is MapSource. First download the map to your computer, then use MapSource to create and transfer routes to your zumo."

This explains why everytime I go away my Nav V fecks up.

The Nav V is designed to run with BaseCamp.
I've been using BaseCamp with my 660 since 2011 without any issues using a Mac which doesn't run MapSource. (Windows only)

Garmin UK disagree apparently.

My last comment was a copy and paste from their email.

The problem I've always had when using BaseCamp is my Nav V will only take in the waypoints and navigates it's own routes between the waypoints.

When I explained this to Garmin UK then I got that response.

The Nav V is loosely based on the Zumo 590. I think they refer to the Nav lV which is based on the 660

I wouldn't put it past them to get it wrong. I've had nothing but grief from Garmin UK and the Nav V for 2 years now. It's a piece of shit (expensive shit at that).

I fear it explains nothing of the sort.

My Navigator V works just fine, all the time, with routes created in BaseCamp. Why yours doesn't I can only start to imagine. I'll start my imaginative juices going with.... Um.... Er.... Um..... Operator error.

Similarly, I have created lots of routes in BaseCamp to share with others (with assorted GPS devices) who have then installed and run the routes quite sucessfuly.
