HELP No Oil Pressure

If the oil light comes on when it shouldn't and there are no unusual noises it is probably a faulty oil pressure switch, or wiring fault. If there are noises that weren't there before the oil light comes on it suggests to me that there is a problem with the oil supply and that, as a result, there has been bearing damage. The main bearings on these bikes are plain and need a constant supply of oil under pressure. As has been said the easiest way to be sure is to test the oil pressure. I would not ride the bike until the reason has been resolved, although if it's already rattling as a result of oil starvation the bearings are likely to be fekked anyway.

Before you start buyin switches just pull off the wire from the oil switch. If the light stays on then it's just a wiring fault [probably where the cable goes under the cylinder goes through a metal clip a long one thats what happend to mine. Did you let the bike stand with the engine off for 20mins before checking the oil?.

Thanks everone, bikes now at shop, they collected it free! they are ringing me later today as they say they have never seen an oil pump fail in the last 10years! they are doing a pressure test and reporting back later. They say it will be oil pressure switch 100%............. lets hope so

oh they also say ALL BOXER engines sound like a bag of nails. lol

If it is an oil pump failure - and you've been riding the bike - it'll need a new engine. Not only will the bearings be shagged but there'd have been no oil splashing around to lubricate loads of other parts!

Read post #8, tdn says the rattle has always been there. So it is not the pressure switch causing the rattle.

guys its a BMW shop thats all i can say at the mo just incase i need to take action.....

i rang them at 4pm yesterday and they said they have it hooked up to a K1?
"it takes a long time to do an oil pressure test we will ring you around 5.30"

NO CALL................

then this morning i get a call "we should have an answer around dinner"

HOW long does it take to do a pressure test? an he or so me thinks...
so im heading up un-anounced just to stick my nose in the workshop just incase she's in bits! (maybe having a pump fitted on the quite)

will report back later.................

If it's rattling because of a failed oil pump, it'll be having more than the pump replaced....

It's good that it's a main dealer - should be much easier to throw it back at them as 'unfit' should this course of action be required.

From my experience of main dealers and BMW warranties they won't do work 'on the quiet' - there's no benefit to them in doing so. If something is wrong and they're doing the work under warranty they'll explain exactly what and why. And probably how much it's costing BMW if they're like my local dealer.

Most likely in this case is that they don't know exactly what the cause of the oil pressure problem is and they're stalling you while they spend more time investigating.

Read post 23, shop has advised TDN that it is the pressure switch, I don't believe them, I would take the bike to another BMW dealer to get an opinion from them, then take it bck to the shop it was bought from.

Ok just droppen in on them they need half hr to run it up on the GT1 diagnostic, so it's a wait and see now as they wouldn't saywhat was wrong

No all sorted now it has had the oil and filter changed and an oil upgrade to 10/50 fully synthetic, and she's sweet, Thanks must go to the shop, and the person from here who printed this post out can print it again and take it to the shop the same as they did with it the 1st time and show them my thanks!!

Don't touch anything! Don't ride it The bike is under warranty, start changing things and the shop may well accuse you of causing the fault! Back to the shop, get them to arrange pick up, give them a time line to repair in writing. If they don't repair to a reasonable standard then it's a different matter BUT don't start swapping bits and pieces.
