Hi guys. Posting this on the off-chance that someone here has had something similar and can offer advice.

Bit of background.... bike is a 58 plate 1200GS with just under 24k miles. Last December I was moving from west London to north Devon and although it wasn't quite due I got Steptoe to give it the 24k service a couple of weeks before the move. The week before the move I had it cleaned by All Year Biker, and put it in the garage on a trickle charger. The day of the move I went to start it and the instrument cluster was dead - no display on the LCD unit, but the bike started OK (and continues to start fine). With the bike running the rev counter was not responding so it looks like the whole unit is dead. TBH I expected it would be something to do with the clean by All Year Biker (pressure washer) and wasn't worried about it. The move went ahead, bike moved down with me and has sat in the garage here ever since. I haven't been in a rush to get it sorted until now because the weather has been so bad, but last week I booked it in to James Sherlock in South Molton.

Sherlocks picked the bike up yesterday and today I've spoken to them. They can't find what's wrong - checked the wiring etc and all seems ok, but no power. As a result they are saying it needs to go to a main agent, which is an issue for me because (a) they're expensive, and (b) the nearest Motorad to me is in Plymouth, which is about 70 miles away. I'm worried this sounds very expensive!

So I thought I'd post this here in the vague hope that someone out there might be able to shed some light on this. The bike is staying at Sherlocks until I decide what to do, so if anyone knows anything please post on here. many thanks :thumby:

There is a 6 pin connector on the underside of the instrument cluster.

Firstly, remove it and check it is dry.

Pinout as follows.

Pin 1: CAN Bus Low
Pin 2: CAN Bus High
Pin 3: Permanent Live
Pin 4: Ground
Pin 5: Not Used on bikes with ABS.
Pin 6: Switched Live

Pins are numbered on the connector - use multimeter and check permanent and switched power is OK.

Wiring diagram is here: http://www.r1200gs.info/R1200GS-WD2.pdf

The bike will run fine without the instrument cluster as it is merely a display. I have been running without a cluster for several months having had mine stolen mid October and been waiting over 4 months for a new one. They are on back order - no stock in UK or BMW Supply Chain. There is a no delivery date.

Mileage is stored on the ECU and also the cluster. If you use the bike without the cluster operational all is well as the mileage will continue to be clocked up on the ECU. However when you plug it back in, the ECU will detect that there is discrepancy between the two mileage readouts and the Odometer will flash. Then it's a case of persuading a dealer to reprogram the cluster accordingly, which is possible by reading the ECU mileage blasting it into the cluster.

Are there any electronic specialist companies you could contact for an 'independent' repair quote? I know there are vehicle ecu companies, maybe one of them could help? Google search??

Trying to think outside the box a bit.

Thanks for the comments. Quick update on this. Sherlocks have been unable to find what the problem is. The diagnostic tool they use can't help as it can't connect to the instrument cluster. They've looked at the wiring and can't find any corrosion or broken wires, and they've fitted a cluster (from another bike that was working) but on my bike that's dead too :blast. That leads us to believe that it's not the cluster that's at fault, but that's as far as they can take it. I suppose that is good news in a way, but I'm still fearing the worst.

So it's off to Ocean BMW in Plymouth. I had a chat with them earlier in the week and they kindly agreed to collect the bike from Sherlocks free of charge. They collected it this morning and it's booked in for diagnostics with them next Wednesday. Hopefully then we'll know what the issue is. I'll update this thread when I know more :thumby:

Have they confirmed that there is permanemt and switched power to the cluster? See my earlier post above with connector pin outs.

It would have been helpful if they had put your instrument panel on the other bike and then you would know for sure. JJH
