HELP spot lights
Hi all
Hope someone on here can help me figure out why my hid spotlights are
Playing up.bought some hella micro de spotlights, and a pair of 35w ballasts and 6000k bulbs I have managed to convert my Hellas to HIDs fitted to 2009 1200gs
Also bought from here bmw fog light switch, loom, and relay all brand new fitted
Them as instructed all works fine but after a while one spot will go out it is random either left or right but when one is out the other will stay on no problem
When I switch them off and straight away switch them back on they will both stay on for maybe ten minutes maybe thirty minutes, maybe left goes out maybe right. It is driving me bonkers.all is wired correctly loom is pretty much plug and play really
Any help will be greatly appreciated
Cheers..

i had that prob on an 1150 with hid equipped micro de lamps,to cut a long story short it turned out to be the feed wire was not man enough, doubled up on cable size and it worked perfectly after that.
i know that the 1150 did not have can bus btw,but check your wire size.

Thanks ukgs but all is bmw loom .not sure if this is man enough for
Hids.
Cheers

I've converted my BMW spot lights to hid and have had no issues so like you say the loom is up to the job.

I've done the same 35w HID conversion to the Micro DE's and its wired into the standard Aux lighting wiring. No problems whatsoever. Check the connections including the fuses.

Thanks but all fuses are fine. Connections seem fine changed ballasts
Thinking it could be faulty and also swapped bulbs but still doing the same
Thing .??? Is there enough power do you think to run these hids??
Its proper doing my head in.
Cheers

Power isn't an issue. You mention its a BMW loom but also a relay? I'm not entirely sure how the standard Aux light loom is connected into the main wiring but I've never come across a relay on mine or heard one in operation either. Have you directly wired into the battery for power or have you found the right place to connect it all together?

Hi beemerman
I wired the loom to the ecu plug that is spare and also plugged the
Relay in to the ecu in only spare place for it to go. Arrrggghhhh
I hate things beating me but this one has me done.just cant think
Of anything else to try. Why I say about there not being enough power
Is because of 1light going out randomly and then the other side is fine
I've not had two go out together? ???????
Cheers all

It could be a bad earth to the lights, try adding an extra earth wire to the body of the lights to see if it cures it?

Ok cheers ian
But its earthed through oe loom.
But still worth a try though mate.
Cheers

When you fitted the HID bulbs to the Micro DE's you would have had to take the connectors off and refit them to get the wires out of the projector assembly. Its possible that those haven't gone back together properly and are just loose causing the issue. I found those connectors the biggest problem when doing the conversion. You can simply cut them right off and resolder/connect which is something I'm planning to do anyway at somepoint to tidy up the wiring.

Thanks beemerman
But I cut rubber boot to fit bulbs then glued it back so haven't touched plugs
At all
Cheers

I still question the need for a relay as its an OEM loom and only runs off an On/Off switch with seperate fuses. Its not being triggered by anything else, its powered via the main loom so why a relay?

Sorry, I'm running out of any ideas and I'm not an electrician so hopefully someone else can give you a few things to try. If they both work at times and then each one randomly stops and starts again I can only think its something not connected correctly or there's something not working as it should.

Its puzzled me mate.
Any bike electrician out there that maybe able to help
Would be appreciated
Thanks.

When I converted mine I cut the original connectirs off and wired directly to the HiD set

No relay, no fuse etc. I think this is where your problem lies. The original BMW loom powers the additional lights from the handlebar switch.

And it's only the dipped beam that needs to be canbus compliant as high beam and additional lights work fine with cheap eBay kits.

Hi blues and twos
Thanks for your input mate ,I did same cut original plugs off loom and soldered
Them to HIDs.but loom has two fuses and comes with relay for ecu ? Not sure if they would work without these.do you think it could be because the ballasts are getting hot or something stupid like that ?Only I did a 30 min ride on m11 today and all was fine soon as I hit traffic and multiple traffic lights one went off????
Maybe just clutching at straws but can't seem to think of anything else.
Cheers

Thanks beemerman.i had them wired with a loom I made up before I got Bmw switch and loom and same thing was happening, changed ballasts, changed bulbs,
Tried with a separate relay for each spot and still one went out, again random?.
I'm having sleepless nights over it mate.. Lol
Cheers again

As a temporary measure I would bypass all you have done and take a fused feed from the battery and an on/off switch and power your HiD's from there.

If it works no problem then you know there is a problem with the loom. If the fault still persists ....... :nenau loose it and throw the light down the road and stamp your feet and cry :D

Jon :beerjug:

Ok mate will try that.
Hope I can sort it soon otherwise .....down the road it goes
Cheers mate
