Can anyone out there help me I cannot get my front wheel axle to screw back into the left hand fork leg. At first I thought it was simply a matter of giggling the wheel until the threads started to engage but after over an hour of trying it would not screw in. So I left if for the night and started again today with fresh patience. It still wont screw in. I therefore withdrew the axle again to check the threads on the axle. They are perfect. I screwed the axle into the fork leg from the external side and it screws in easily. So I tried to see if the axle would screw without the wheel.....it doesn't  It just won't bite. All I can think of is that the start of the internal thread is damaged? I haven't got any taps to clean the thread so I will have to see if I can buy one on Monday unless anyone knows where I can get one today? Having said this does anyone know the thread size / Tap size that I need. Or does anyone have a better idea please:nenau
I need the bike for tomorrow but it looks as though I will have to sort some other means of travel as I don't hold much hope for today. I have a KTM shop around the corner do you reckon that the KTM front axle is the same?
Devine intervention GSuser style desperately needed:thumb2

I think that this may be in the wrong section unless the arrangement is different on earlier 800s. What you describe sounds more like a 1200 axle than the internal threaded axle of my 2013 800.
Of little help I know but a post in the 1200 section may attract responses that are not forthcoming here.

Yeah, the F800 axle shouldnt screw in, it should just push in until the R/H end is flush, you then tighten the R/H clamp screws. Then you insert the Bolt in the L/H side and tighten to torque then tighten L/H clamp screws. I should say that you then should go on to loosen the R/H clamp screws again, bounce the front a few times then re-tighten R/H clamp ( There is another way which involves holding the axle while you tighten the L/H bolt, this negates having to tighten/undo/retighten after bouncing the front)

Thanks for your replies chaps. First of all my bike is a F700GS 2013. I forgot to update my profile which I will do after I have finished this reply so sorry about the profile red herring. The set up on my bike is different to your 800s as my set up is push through from right hand side fork a then it screw into the left hand fork. Torque the axle using allen key from right hand side and then toque up screw on right hand fork clamp (there is no clamp on left hand fork). The good news is that I have solved my problem. I had taken my forks out of the bike to fit gaiters. When I refitted the forks I simply done this in reverse order for dismantling as per my trusty Haynes manual. However what the manual didn't tell me is that I should not have tightened the fork brace before refitting the wheel so what I had was the line up of the axle was out by the proverbial gnats cock and as such my axle bolt couldn't engage the thread. This would never have been a problem if I had not had to take my forks out ( ie puncture repair). So all is back together and ready to roll tomorrow and a lesson learnt by me. Thanks for your replies I will now go and amend my profile.
Cheers chaps

I thought the explanation was comprehensible enough.....clearly not. So for clarification:- the middle sentence in the fifth line down of my reply below I stated that I removed my forks to fit gaiters onto them. I then go on to say that I would not have encountered the problem I had if I had not removed my forks for example such as if I was only taking the wheel out to repair a puncture for example. :banghead:

apologies

my apologies for being rather thick, my level of education is obviously lacking compared to everyone else on the forum.
