Fermanagh police officers return fire after attack
Police have sealed off the village to conduct searches
Shots have been fired at police in a County Fermanagh village close to the border with the Irish Republic.
Officers returned fire when they came under attack in Garrison, 20 miles from Enniskillen, on Saturday evening. There were no reports of injuries.
Police sealed off the area and have been searching nearby woodland.
Security officials believe dissident republicans against the peace process may have been involved. Fermanagh has seen a lot of dissident activity.
They are also believed to have been responsible for the fatal shootings of two soldiers outside Massereene barracks in Antrim, and a police officer in Craigavon, County Armagh, in March.
Tommy Gallagher, the SDLP assembly member for Fermanagh, said the incident was worrying for local people.
"It just looks like a rewind to the pattern in many border villages 30 years ago. So the people responsible for this have to be condemned," he said.
BBC Ireland correspondent Mark Simpson said that Fermanagh was one of the two areas to have seen most dissident activity, along with north Armagh.
"The likes of the Real IRA have been pretty active there in recent weeks. That's who the finger of blame will be pointing at, at this very early stage," he said.
In line with agreed protocol the Police Ombudsman has been informed of the incident.

Army checks car for bomb at police HQ in Belfast
Army bomb experts are inspecting a car which burst into flames after being left near the Northern Ireland Policing Board building, BBC News understands.
The vehicle was crashed through a barrier at Clarendon Dock, Belfast, before being abandoned. Two men were seen running away.
BBC Ireland correspondent Mark Simpson said the Army was checking the boot. A small explosive may have been planted.
There was no evidence but republican dissidents were suspected, he said.

Man injured in Belfast gun attack
A man has been injured in a gun attack in west Belfast.
He was shot three times in the left leg in Beechmount Crescent as he went to make a food delivery at about 2220 GMT on Friday.
A police spokesperson said officers were trying to establish a motive for the attack.
The spokesperson said anyone with information has been asked to contact detectives.

So much for the season of goodwill:(
Just at a time when most folk are thinking about putting a Christmas tree up:mad:

........
Tommy Gallagher, the SDLP assembly member for Fermanagh, said the incident was worrying for local people............................

Worrying for all Irish people; we can't head down that road again? Please no.

We've come so far...

In my teens and twenties I wouldn't have dared to visit Ireland for fear of the violence....

I remember meeting some lads and lasses from Belfast at The Monsters of Rock festival, years ago, we had a great time, being young and daft ........ and they were so down when it was over as they'd have to go back to check points and saying the right thing...

I love Ireland (North or South) I love the people I've met. As a tourist maybe I don't see the boundaries that locals can... but I know the walls and fences were getting smaller..

Please don't let the gangsters win.

:beerjug:

Doesn;t matter if yer Irish or British or any nationality that inhabits this fine land of ours

Ahh , I was going to Donegal Town last Night and couldnt figure why
the Armed Gardai were on the Road.
The Picture is a clearer one now.

This is not a "Here we go again"" the Big Guns , the Capacity to get
them , and use them is not gone ,but isnt a threat anymore.
This is just a handful of Idiots , with no Idea of the Values of the Nation
that they think they are fighting to become one with.
This is Over ,Make no mistake.
It will become more evident over time , the border is gone.

Totally disagree........as per usual with most of your posts.

400lb car bomb and shots fired......... "Isn't a threat any more"??????

I unfortunately feel that "Here we go again" is apt.

A threat to individual , targets. A VERY Brave few Men and women that
put themselves in the front line ,to protect us. They know the risks ,and are prepared to take them.
Of course this doesnt make the Terrorist acts right by any stretch of the imagination.
But not a threat to the Peace we have been experiencing
The Devolution is Much stronger than , the few numptys that claim to
represent a minority.

Here we go again is absolutely NOT apt.
