Hertfordshire Green Lanes - RUPP challenges

Today I’ve mostly been making friends with the Hertfordshire Countryside access and definitive Map officers in an effort to define a tasty route.

Some interesting points came to light.

Since RUPP’s became outa bounds for us motorcycle chaps they’ve had virtual no challenges which the guy I spoke to found very surprising (He could not think of any RUPP downgrades that have been successfully challenged)

He also said he’d recently downgraded a Byway however that was only to parallel axle vehicles which has highlighted/proven that motorcycles do very little damage.

Which got me thinking – We need to get a coordinated campaign to get some of these RUPPs upgrade and I reckon if we suggest that the upgrade should not apply to parallel axle vehicles it would stand a better chance of being accepted.

I’ll find out how to apply for an upgrade

We’ll need a target list of RUPPs – I suppose we should first highlight those that go from a Byway to a RUPP like the one that goes through North Mymms Park to South Mymms

What other Hertfordshire RUPPS would you suggest?

Going back to this original post. Are you guys not aware that, post NERC, the oportunity to get routes upgraded are NIL. It doesn't matter what evidence you've got, any claim for Byway status had to be logged before January 2005 (yes 200five) because the bastards moved the goal posts three times after first saying that we had until 2020 then moving it to the end of 2006 then when they saw how successful the TRF & others were in researching and claiming routes they moved it to Jan 2005. Utter bloody untrustworthy bastards.

I've my children this weekend... if you want to go over some route options drop me a PM

cheers. Been marking up some lanes on the landranger 166.

There seem to be a few scattered around, looks like I could link a few from Baldock, then head SE through Wood End then south to East Hets, then south down west of Hoddesson.

Any area that you would say are must do's or don't do's?

The roman road north of Ardley is out of bounds.

We rode through Wood End to Ardley it' was the Byway I've never really been east of there I think Greg has a better idea.

I'll dig out my maps

As some one who lives & rides in Herts, is there anything I can do to help?

Hi Herts Green Laners,

I'm a recent member, & am taking delivery of my BM This weekend... I've been riding some lanes around Herts for the last few years (mostly solo) on the Africa Twin that i've recently sold, & I'll be looking to do the same on the new one. I've been to Herford library & consulted the Definitive Maps of Hertfordshire & marked up the BOATS on my OS Land Rangers but often when you get there the status of the lane has been changed, or they've put up these low gates that horses can trot over... There's still plenty of stuff to ride though.

Anyway, is anyone interested in forming a casual group to ride what we still can every now & then, do a bit of 'on the ground' research & generally have a pleasant time drifting through the countryside?

Maybe you chaps have done this already (i'm sorry i've not read through the whole thread) if so, are you still going out? & when we get some decent weather can you stand another bike tagging along?

count me in..

just let me know where and when and I'll be there. I'm based in st Albans.

Steve

Hi Steve, Im in Hertford, am due to collect my 800GS on Saturday, but it'll have road tyres, so i think it'd be wise to wait until we've had a bit more sun & a bit less Rain before attempting any lanes. I was considering buying a set of TKC's & getting my local fitters to swap them over for the odd muddy weekend. What are you riding (Bike & tyres)? & Have you been on any rideouts with these other guys?

i've got a r1200gs however

i'll be on a ktm 450exc for the green lanes :)

I've just got the pogo so have just started the whole off road thing. I've listed on the www.greenlanecrew.co.uk site so will try and get out with those guys and am looking to join the TRF. Also looking on here for local ride outs.

I'd like something like a 400 single (Was considering a DRZ) But realistically i've not got the space (considering how often i'd use it in anger) for a second bike, So it'll be the 800 for me & the less challenging lanes available in Herts. I'll certainly post something up here when i get myself organised...

BTW Steve, what are the the advantages of being a TRF member? I was looking at their site just yesterday!
