Hexhead Alternator rewind

I have a failed Denso Alternator (48,000 miles GSA 2012) does anyone know if this can be repaired/rewound. Or should I cough up the £760 notes BMW Motorrad are offering to relieve me off? No reasonable priced second ones available. James Sherlock want £600!! ouch
 
My alternator packed up last year. I was able to get it fixed locally for about 80 Euros, if the case isn't cracked it should be able to be repaired by any decent auto electrical repairs
 
In 99% of cases the alternator case usually cracks and becomes deformed making the unit scrap. I’ve more than a dozen piled up ready to take down the local scrap yard for £50/£70 pocket money :D
 
My local electrical shop couldn’t mend my none corroded alternator as the reckoned they couldn’t get parts for them. I bit the bullet and bought a new one from Cotswold BMW with Ukgser discount at £630 delivered.
 
Would it be prudent too remove my 2012 Alternator too get it refurbished before it gives up...?.
 
This is why in 99% of cases 1200 alternators can’t be reconditioned. They don’t have the usual alternator electrical problems needing a simple rewind or stator. It’s more terminal. I’ve many more

I think removing the fuel tank and treating the casing with acf50 or the likes would be worth it. I covered my replacement alternator with acf50 grease when I fitted it.
 
That's something on the lines I was thinking,
Or I thought...perhaps too stip it down and lube the bearings...
Would not want it too give up abroad...

Exactly what I was thinking!

Though when I soak mine in it late autumn, I use there paraffin sprayer with the long nozzle so I reckon my alternator is getting coating without taking the tank off.

Totally agree, I have a small cheap touch up spray gun dedicated to ACF50.
140psi produces a very fine mist even in cold weather, my alternators have always had a good covering it also gets inside so no trace of corrosion.
Current 2012 GS used all year round and done 94K miles.
 
Any part no on em? anything else use the same one? looks fairly generic. 600 quid is ridiculous.

My alternator went a few years ago. As Steptoe said the case was cracked. When I looked further I found that the stators had really corroded badly and the expansion cause by that had cracked open the case. For a few days before it seized the drive belt was slipping for a few seconds after start. So if you hear the squealing from that area be prepared for alternator death. BTW I got hold of a second hand one from Utah via ebay £150. It was like new.

An almost identical story for me, I got lucky with a used Denso on eBay from a breakers in Arizona for £65, being a dry state it was like brand new.

Bit of a sod removing the front ESA shock absorber to remove the alternator, maybe Steptoe knows an easier way ??

I managed to free up the old seized rotor/stator afterwards and the only bit of casing that cracked was a section underneath between the mounting feet so it was still a useable unit.

You might get lucky with yours if you manage to free up the moving parts and douse it all in ACF50 ?

I would recommend any owner of a Hexhead give their alternator a thorough spray of ACF50 or similar every autumn to keep it working.
 
Surely with the thousands of variations of 12volt alternators out there it must be possible to fairly simply engineer a conversion bracket to adapt a more readily available unit to fit the hexheads to overcome this issue

I think we are members of a very large group suffering genny death. I didn't remove the front shock to change mine. I did take the tank and the ECU mounts off though.

I've often thought that and if I'm ever in the need to change another one I think I will look into that idea. As far as I can see there's nothing special about them so we could probably source an appropriate car alternator.
