Going down to tour the Southwest and West on Fri with Mrs GFC and 2 others. Is it a legal requirement now to wear HiVis south of the border? :beerjug:

No it's not unless you are a learner or in the new novice category. I usually wear it myself. I was astounded to see the back of a flurro van come to life when a maintaince worker stepped away from the back of the van he was also wearing hi viz and had become invisible. Makes you think. JJH

I had a 20k commute to Dublin City Centre and/or across the M50 to Dundrum and Airside. Over the course of about 10 years, daily, in every sort of weather, I noted the differences in other drivers behaviour when I didn't wear a hi Viz jacket with and without sleeves, when I wore a fluorescent Sam Browne and wore no Hi Viz.
It was a pretty crude test as I only measured the different times to get to work in the morning and get home in the evening

I also experimented with the difference between having spots and having the full beams on ... ok I know I shouldn't!

I ride defensively and only filter below about 30 kph

The fastest times were were invariably with full hi viz and use of full beams and spot lamps.

The slowest times, and the most SMIDSY moments were without hi viz and only dipped lights.

Using a gilet type hi viz or a Sam Browne hi viz were better than none. Using high beams without hi Viz was only marginally better.

So, I always wear a hi viz jacket with sleeves, and, unless behind a vehicle, or at nighttime use high beams!

Absolutely yes.

Hi Vis, an extremely loud exhaust (they save lives ya know) and as many extra lights on the bike as your alternator will take, all lit up at the same time.

Don't forget an extra loud Stebel horn, or if you want, a "Dukes of Hazard" airhorn set......they're apparently trending in the 1200 section now :thumb2

Oh and it's long been proven that having "POLITE" on the back of your hi-vis vest is another sure way of making you safer......plus of course you'll get a huge amount of respect from fellow bikers at any tea stalls you stop at :beerjug:

PLEASE don't run on main beam it really is about as selfish as we can get without driving a bulldozer.
But dip beam with dipped spot lights def reduces the SMIDSY potential on my bike. I believe the lights triangle is more obviously a bike.
Personally I hate hi viz but when I have used it I've noticed a sum total of no difference in other drivers behaviour.
Blue covers on the lights might help though. ;)
