Hi guys. First time to post a message on ur fantastic forum. Very interesting to read advice on all aspects of bmw ownership. Long time beemer owner but new to this wonderful interweb contraption.I have a 1990 K100 (thats another days discussion) and a 2002 gs1150.

Have a query in relation to that old chestnut - the gs gearbox.
My bike has 23000 on the clock. Have had a fantastic two and a half years ownership and it has proved to be reliable and fun to ride.
Have noticed in the last couple of months a metallic noise coming from down below only in forth gear. Not particularly loud and no vibration but just a tiny bit annoying. It seems to be worse in hot weather and especially when you throttle off abruptly.
Would it help to change the gearbox oil to something other than sae 80w90 or is it just a "quirk of the bike".
Any advice would be greatly appreciated....

Better late than never :o

Hello & welcome Raven :beerjug:
The Ireland section is where all the craic is :aidan

With regard to the gearbox you'd probably be better off posting your question in the Technical section. But I feel the answer might well be "They all do that Sir" :D

raven, hello and welcome to UKGSer.

I'm going to shift your post over tot he technical section of the forum where I think you'll get far more reponse than here in the newbie section.

Thanks for introducing yourself to us here, enjoy your stay. Here's hoping you'll get the gearbox problem sorted soon but I think Jockser has probably hit the nail on the head for you. :thumb2

Sometimes I can hear my transmission making all kinds of imaginary noises, the oil comes out clean so I wear earplugs and ride on, have you had the tyres feeling "chunky" experience yet? thats another speciality:eek::thumb

Gear box

my 1150 has done 72000 miles and had had a noisy fourth gear for ages, possibly 'cos it is used a lot but nothing ever happens and my bike has been used in some very tough terrain, so don't worry about it the gearboxes are like a tractors but keep going.

Mine used to do the same until i changed the box (for a different reason) and i have heard of others that make the same 4th gear noise.
I've heard that it maybe the gearshift return spring inside the box not detenting correctly but i haven't looked.
Stay with the correct spec oil, wear better ear plugs and dont worry about it.
