HID earth fault?

Has anyone got experience of HIDs playing up?

I thought I needed a new bulb for my HID as the current bulb sparks on start up and then went out.

upon investigation tonight with a voltmeter, I am getting a current from the ballast / module unit and then like before the current / voltage dies.

My guess is that there is an earthing fault with the ballast unit?

all the electrical contacts have been cleaned and i'm still having problems

can one check for an earth fault on a ballast unit?

Thanks

Have you got HIDS on both main/dip? If so, try swapping the ballasts over.

Sounds like it could have enough juice to strike, but not passing enough current to maintain the discharge.

There is nothing much you can do to check the Ballast as they are normally potted. I wouldn't go poking around the high voltage end. If you are comfortable with wiring, can you run the lamp directly off the battery to test that relays etc are not restricting the current flow?

I had this problem on my Rallye bike's HID, it was a faulty ballast.

I have the HID for one dip / main only. The other lights work fine in all modes.

It's just the HID that is playing up. I'm not having electrical issues elsewhere with the bike hence im struggling to get my head around the HID fault.

maybe I'll have to get a replacement ballast unit?

When mine did that it turned out to be a loose crimped connection made by yours truly :blast

Two separate bulbs / ballasts. One for main/ one for dip. If you have both and one is playing silly buggers then swap the ballasts over to see if it is bulb or ballast. If you have only one then you can't easily do this.
