My dipped bulb has blown (again) and I have been thinking about installing HID lighting. Can this bee done in the existing lamp housings or is it better to fit a bar and additional lights?

Cheers
Philippe

Either / or really. Personally I don't like the light bars but they're very popular. I went for a Nippy Norman dipped beam replacement that fits into the standard light - just needs a hole drilling in the back and it's done.

Excellent bit of kit & the second best mod I've done to my bike :thumb

Just fitted 2 HID lamps in original reflectors. Deadly lights.
Had to put the dip through a relay, as the canbus was shutting it off, probably due to load coming on straight after battery had started the engine.
Main beam just plug and play.
Stuck the ballasts to bottom of oil cooler with double sided tape, plus cable tie for safety.
Paid SR1,050, about 150 quid, Phillips ballasts, unknown bulbs, a hint of blue to them, but quite ok.
REcommended.

I went a bit nuts and fitted 4 conversion HID kits (to 12 GSA) to the original (1) dipped beam (2) main beam and (3) & (4) the fog/driving lights that I got with the adventure. The main and dipped beam were H7 conversions and the fog lights were H11 conversions.

Have 2 ballasts mounted under the front fender on the adventures crash bar and the other two mounted behind the instrument panel.

The kits came from HIDs 4 U and all up was about 380 quid. The lights are fantastic and viewed from the front (with 3 HID lights on) the bike has a boat load of road presence.

Will try and post pics if I remember tonight, and can work out how.

These HID kits are great and give fantastic night vision and myopic tin box drivers seem to notice me more.

Approx £190 + VAT :)

That's bloody good!

So, would you say these lights are better than say, a set up with PIAA 510's and some Hella micro D's? I had this set up on my 1150adv and it was excellent :clap

I don't really want to go sticking more spots on the bike, as cool as they look, I would sooner have the same performance from the bikes own lamps with Xenon's fitted!

Just putting the new (H7) bulb in mine today and job done, had the HID on the 1150 and they were great, as I don't like a lot of spotlights.
I paid £115 for one set from HID4U and the new bulb was £30, the 1200 will take the one no problem on the canbus, but two can start the bulb warning off, so you will need a resistor.
I found the cheaper and easier way to go is the same as I did on the 1150, one HID and a PIAA bulb from NN, plenty room for one ballast and the PIAA is really good, 55W with 110W output, :thumb

In my opinion yes. I didn't really fancy putting lots of spot/fog lights on etc and with my record on green laning - it would be more expensive kit to damage. ;) :D

HID all fitted to the dip beam now, great result :thumb no poblem with the canbus system, and the bike has ABS, :D

Thanks to jbj for a well made and fitting bracket to mount the ballast box on, I can't really add any more info on fitting to the thread jbj posted, just to say HID is the way to go. (imho)

:D

Tricky - was that including fitting? Any idea what Cannons charge for that?

If you fit a Pilot kit, the only thing you have to do is cut a hole in the bulb cover, to take the wires in, after that it's plug and play :D
One of the easiest mods I've done.

... Rather than HID I've just fitted a pair of PIAA replacement lamps to the 'The Prawn' ... definitely get you noticed and I think I may have melted a small Toyota on the A418 this afternoon!

No - that's just the price + vat. I shouldn't think it would take them more than an hour or so :nenau

I thought I did not have a canbus error prob, testing the bike indoors and short trip out. All perfick.
However, left bike out at work near Riyadh, bloody canbus shut-off light just after starting. +40C temperature might be doing something. Anyhow, to solve the matter, I put the dip beam through a relay, although this gives an bulb error signal on the dash. FFS! Reluctant to put shunt resistor.

Hi-beam good, presumably because battery has recovered before I put it on.
Idea would be to increase the on-delay before the dipbeam lights after engine starts.

Any clues?

Well I think I finally figured it out...
