HID problem on a 1150 Adventure

Hi all,

Fitted a HID kit to my bike and they work great, but the battery seems to discharge very quickly meaning I can't start the bike.

I have checked all of the connections and they look fine.

Do I have a knackered battery?

Hi Ringoss, i will try and help and get this one started, everybody is probably tucking into sunday lunch mmmmm.

You could have, so just to confirm
with the bike turned off, and the battery still connected you have a battery that is draining?
Did you put a multi/volt meter across the treminals then?

have you tried removing fuses!

Stick a multimeter across the connections to the HID ballast and see if it's drawing any current.

If it's not, your battery is fekked

Had the same problem,
check to see if the RID is staying on when ignition is turned off.
If the ballast is mounted near the RID unit it can cause interference with it and leave it on.
No permenant damage just move the balllast away from the RID.

I'll move the ballast once the weather clears up! God, I would love a garage!

Since fitting HIDs to my 1150gs y2k model my RID plays up as well, I just remove the fuse to it to re set it. Do you know why this happens? I don't really want to move the ballast as I've tucked them neatly behind the clock fascia.

Would some sort of screening like tin foil around the ballast sort it does anyone know a soulotion other than moving the ballast box?

The ballast unit creates a fair old magnetic field,
this causes the rid to malfunction, another symptom, not often recognised is that the fuel level does not drop either. I had the same problem with mine but I have not moved the ballast yet. Foil shielding would not be enough.
If you do find suitable sheilding I'd be keen to know.

Thanks for that, my fuel,temp, gear and clock all froze up but easily sorted fuse out and back.

May try some thin lead sheet to wrap round the low beam ballast will let you know if it cures the problem. will try it in a week or so too cold at the mo to be fiddlin so to speak

Which ballasts do you have on your bike for the HID's? The Zerocool's, Wassall's or another version? Have not managed to fit my ones yet...

But I had the prob of the RID freezing when the low beam ballast was fitted behind the speedo clock. I have cured the problem by wrapping the ballast and black box with this stuff. Just fitted it today and no further probs so far

Seems to have stopped the magnetic field disturbing the LCD screen.

I might have the same issue but I genuinely think my battery is a bit flat. My clock resets occasionally when I start the bike. I put it down to a dodgy battery.

Also my ballasts are mounted under the beak

it seems you have bought the Zerocool version. But I must admit it looks very much like the Wassall version, too. What a coincidence
I like your solution with the self adhesive lead
Hopefully soon the weather will be better. I can't await to fit my stuff.
A garage would be nice...

A weak battery might causing this but not necessarily.
Loose magnets and a damaged rotor of the starter motor might be another reason. In this case, the starter motor pulls much more current which leads to a massive decrease in voltage.
I have had the same problem with the clock resets when I started the engine.
And it was not the battery....
