I've just bought a high mile 1150GS, 110k, mostly BMW service history and well looked after by it last owner.
Apart from needing a major service, which I can do myself, can anybody advise what the main items are that might need doing at this sort of mileage please?

No evidence of the clutch having been changed but apparently it has spent most of it's time up and down the motorway.

Fairly recently it had a FD bearing and also the swing arm bearings were replaced.

It sounds tappety, which I hope will be sorted when I adjust them... If it doesn't quieten down could it be the camchain/tensioner?

Front brakes feel a bit spongy but again I'm hoping to cure that with a fluid change and bleeding.

Any pointers/info appreciated. Thanks.

Clean it.

Change all oils - engine, gearbox + final drive, brake fluid flush.

Check under tank for electrical wires wearing thin due to rubbing on frame or hardened due to age - replace.

Put battery on charge.

Check tyres.

Check fuel filter (if fitted...)

Check air filter / replace.

If suspension soggy send to ABE http://www.allbikeengineering.co.uk for a rebuild, about £100 - £160 per shock depending on what needs doing.

Check discs - if thin replace, get good quality but excellent price from Lord Steptoe from this site.

Follow Lord Flipflys instructions. (see above )

Just ride it, and be smug in a great purchase. Mine's done 108,000 and flies along, lots of regular basic servicing as per above and I'm planning on a blast to the Alps with mrs me later in the year on it... Plenty higher mileage bikes here...

Oh and put some fuel in!

If the the bike is still fitted with rubber brake hoses I would recommend replacing them as a priority with a braided set, eg Goodridge.

Brake hoses, alt belt, throttle cables, and check clutch hose near slave cylinder for corrosion (water trapped under hose sleeve).

Check what they mean by "swing arm" bearings, they may mean paralever bearings...

Cheers,
the big ones that the whole swingarm/prop shaft housing pivots on.
Paralever coming off for a lick of paint so will check it . Thanks.

Only done about 15 miles so far to make sure it's basically okay before I spend any money on it. Smiling from ear to ear all the way- it's a totally different ride to my RT, quicker to turn into the corners and feels much more flickable. I thought the RT was pretty nimble but this just seems to tip in without any effort.

Get a spare alt belt but don't bother fitting it unless you need to...it's a roadside job :thumb2

Check the wiring loom below the headstock......they were often cable tied up too tight which meant that they didn't have enough wiggle room and instead, kinked at the cable tie, causing breaks in the long term

The camchain tensioners are relatively cheap and easy to replace and there's an upgrade available for the LHS (around £40) from Motorworks, worth doing regardless? Probably just the throttle bodies ticking anyway and again, there are plenty folks who can sort them out for you..

It's all been suggested already but I'd add copious amounts of WD40 and ACF-50 as required. Enjoy.

Clean it!!! go and wash your mouth out at once!, just ride the thing just run in and ready for a round the world trip!!.

+1 on that, sent my R1100GS shock to ABE last weekend, they got it Monday, did the job on Wednesday, arrived back with via UPS first thing this morning. £110 including postage. Fitting later, looks good. :D

That's worth knowing - mine came with a spare but leaking rear shock so I might get that done at some point.
Only had time to replace the gaiter on the swingarm- a fair bit of crap in there so I guess time will tell whether the paralever bearings are shot. Cleaned them out with brake cleaner and re-greased.

Can anybody tell me if a little teeny weeny bit of play in the FD bearing is normal/ok? It only is a tiny bit which can only be felt by putting sideways pressure on the wheel.
No oil leaks to be seen
