High output alternator

I could be talking bollox here Brassmonkey, but, the following is a common mod on older Guzzis and AFAIK is appropriate for airheads:

If it's just a healthier charge rate you are after then you should be able to fit a police spec regulator which allows more current to be sent to the battery (for all the extra electrical gubbins the rozzers had fitted). Motorworks used to sell them when they did Guzzi stuff and I'd imagine they still hold stock :nenau

We picked up two after the fateful trip to Calais!!! The good thing is there are no bushes to crap out, and the gen light prob is also kicked into touch :oonyack

We also plan on running bike coms and other bit and pieces. We have a trip planned for mid September, so will let you know how they hold up. There will also be a write up in the Tec section soooooooooooooooon!:rob

been thinking about this mod too.

Have you seen this? It has a section about aftermarket alternators, comparing Motorrad Elektrik against enduralast ?

http://bmwmotorcycletech.info/techindex.htm

There is also some stuff on adventure rider.

Still not if I will do it, having to buy from the US does not help!

nah i am just a peasant who can not post pics so BM posted pics. The Ozzies are/were doing this mode. The Ozzies are using a Holden Commodore which has a output of 750 watts plus.

There is a link with more detail but I can't find it at moment. Will see if i ca find it

Excuse my ignorance and the possible thread hijack, but, in the pictures is that oil thermostat an OE BMW part? If so does anyone know of its availability and from which bike does it originally come from, also how close to the frame downtube does it sit? Just thinking about it for my R100GSPD

Thank you

Nick

Thanks for the link to the alternator comparison test too. Interesting to have some measured results for different alternators and battery types. I didnt realise that the battery type made such a difference.

That must have cost a packet, high output Alternators run at about 300/400 quid!!! plus the machining. Cool Conversion and credit where it is due. BUT
not for me.
1/ Alternator would crap out in mud and water ( have run 4x4 off-road race team, alternators fail on a regular basis. MORE than a stock Boxer Set up.
2/ The bearings in the pulleys would also crap out.
3/ And last but not least Belts break!
4/Alternator is very exposed see point 1/

But a very very cool conversion:cool:

"high output Alternators run at about 300/400." Clearly u have not been to Australia, Every house has 3 commodores in various state of repair on the property.
"1/ Alternator would crap out in mud and water " I heard they have no problems with one doing many many kms. have you seen australian bull dust
"2/ The bearings in the pulleys would also crap out." rememeber it is up under the tank and behind the front mudguard siting very high and protected
"3/ And last but not least Belts break!" does a belt break on a Harley Ferguson or a F650CS see point 2
"4/Alternator is very exposed see point 1/ " see point 2.

Geez ya a negative little bugger ant ya. and I always wondered why they said POMS were such whingers:hide

I would love one and better than that peice of junk supplied that ya scared to turn headlight and heated grips on

have a look at this link http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=225223

have a look at Franks site on what the Ozzies get up t http://www.geocities.com/fwarner_au/

Just add water to make grinding paste.

"2/ The bearings in the pulleys would also crap out." rememeber it is up under the tank and behind the front mudguard siting very high and protected

There is a dirty great hole that will fill up with MUD (remember water and Dust) The hole is at the same hight as the cylinders :nenau

3/ And last but not least Belts break!" does a belt break on a Harley Ferguson or a F650CS see point 2
