Hilltop - is it worth it?

And there it’s is, a straight answer mr nutty ktm. I’m 100% with u on everything u said.

So really the dyno part is really a waste of time and I’m likely to get the same result just sending my ecu to hilltop.

Tractors- I get the comment made re mpg. I think he was saying that if the ecu is dumb to the hilltop code then it may not account for it in the figures. Depends how the usage is calculated but it was a valid question me thinks. Is the ecu calculating injector duty cycle etc or just something simple like a basic algorithm based on TPS readings over a set distance etc.

To be as accurate as it apparently is, I think it must be working on actual amount of fuel injected after all the map referencing and calculating is done, in which case anything HT does is further up the chain and should have no effect on accuracy.

To work out the fuel consumption, it has to calculate fuel useage, rather than the old mechanical systems and KE jetronic where K = Konstant.

So whether it be a power commander, hilltop or magic beans, the calculated consumption relates to the amount of fuel being injected. It doesn't matter if the pressure is increased, larger injectors, lengthened band width. The ecu will still know, based on readings from the various sensors (temp, knock sensor, etc) how many cc of fuel it is injecting at any precise moment.

From there it works out distanced travelled, from the wheel sensors and comes up with an average, which as we all know, can and does vary over time. I can say that the average fuel consumption shown tallies with my own fill up/how far travelled maths.

Sorry, but someone was trying my patience and I have a low arsehole threshold today.

Yeah I think that’s is most plausible but may not be the total story in the bmw case.

My land rover disco used to say I was doing 120mpg downhill and 16 up in real time. The gs doesn’t do that so it must make a calculation over time or distance so I doubt it’s just raw injector volume.

I could get 999 out of the Omega down hill, up hill well a lot less.

It probably relates more to momentum of a larger vehicle, and how above 1200rpm, in general, there's no fuel being injected.

Ride along in 6th at say 3000rpm, shut off completely and see how quickly your gs will slow, then compare that to a disco.

I won't be bothering you anytime soon although I can't promise long term.

I toured Scotland in November on my Aprilia RSV once. Holy cow was it cold, ice on the bike each morning and my mates srad 600 iced it's carbs until we stuffed his old fag packet into each air intake. When we went to collect my van which a nice bike dealer in Stirling let me park in his yard he said "did u get your knee down". Errr no I didn't as i was busy trying to stay upright on the ice.

As he lives in Dundee I can't promise there won't be a repeat performance albeit at a warmer time of year but for now, it's all yours biking wise.

Scotland has more Gingers than the rest of the UK.
Scotland has more men wearing skirts than all the trannies in the rest of the UK
What with the midges, poor weather it's not for me

I’ve always taken the ‘pre’ figures with a pinch of salt, as I’d imagine that BMW would have a lot of angry customers if a bike claiming to have 125bhp only has 83bhp or whatever it is. Obviously nobody else does either, otherwise BMW would have a lot of lawsuits to deal with.

And the post remap figures? Who cares. It’s not a sportsbike. But it rides much nicer after the remap.

mine was recorded at somewhere in the 80's pre remap, which did seem very low and the Hilltop guys said it was one of the worst they had seen. I'd be very dubious but the guy before me had just had his pre-run at a 103 bhp ish (pretty reasonable) - why would they fudge mine and not his?

More importanrly, what explanation did they give for such a poor BHP figure in the first place?

Did they give you a detailed reason why your bike was so low on power?

Because if they claim to have 'fixed' it, then the remedy was totally within their ability, so they would know exactly why it ran so badly in the first place.

What was their reason?.... because the mapping doesn't change, none of your engine components were changed.

Or did they voodoo you....

Had the flash done on mine. Was it worth it? Mmmmm well it's certainly a lot smoother and runs better. Particularly when cold or on the motorway. Much more powerful though? Dunno. Hard to say. Have to say I am sceptical about the size of the power gains, but then it does seem a little too easy to prove one way or the other on another dyno, so why lie?

All in all I decided it probably was, but then I had just spent £240.

Serious question (aimed at working out what's changed in the fuelling/ignition post HT)...................

Pre HT, standard air filter on my 1190R and when the engine came on cam the air box roar was as loud as feck (lovely sound :) ).

Pre HT, I fitted a free flowing air filter and when the engine came on cam the air box roar had all but gone.

Post HT and the air box roar was back.......with a vengeance :)

What's going on there?

Andres

Hilltop had put it back to standard and charged you for it :D

Sir, you win first prize.

Your prize is to listen to my bike (full volume now please) doing a full throttle run on Geoff's dyno :bounce1

Haha, that rear tyre was almost off the rollers. No wonder some power charts are down if it's dragging on the deck... haha

There's tyre marks all over the steel plate.... and you try to tell me rolling roads don't harm tyres hahahahaha :blast

I wouldn't trust them with my skateboard :D
