hole on side of engine, weep of coolant???

700 miles round Wales will do that to your bike. :thumby:
Did see a few tossers to who was around snowdonia area on the 14th

Whilst I haven't got one of these bikes, in a recent MCN and there is a letter sent in re a similar situation on a Honda CRF250L (i.e. coolant leak from said hole). Response back was that this is normal on a water pump using ceramic bearings, and that it should bed in after 1000 miles or so. It would be normal to see upto a 10p size of coolant on the garage floor until then.

Just to help put some of your minds at rest.

If that was the case why would the dealer suggest i get in in for repair very soon ?

Not necessarily. :rob

Both my LCs (standard and then GSA) had weeping peepholes for the first few thousand miles and both then stopped with no need to replace the pump on either bike.

So maybe some need a new pump and some don't. :nenau

Booked mine in today, 21st August first date available, weeping out also 700 miles on the clock.

Strange reading this......I too noticed a large area of "blue" stain around where my right foot is. After close observation I noticed that the coolant level was below the minimum marker.... I topped it up, took it to the dealer who told me to keep an eye on it....must admit it has never leaked again and I've done 20'000 mls...... Doesn't fill me with confidence tho as I'm off to Norway next month and more worrying..Morocco in October.....

If it was your right foot, you have a big problem, as the weep hole is on the left of the bike!:D

It doesn't matter if it's Norway or Morocco, if it looses enough coolant the engine will die. Can well believe that ceramic seals need to bed in and that after that process is complete the leaking should stop. No different from running in any other parts. It does look bad though on such an expensive piece of engineering.

wiped it clean and checked coolant level which was about a quarter of an inch below minimum level....topped it up and all has been ok for a couple of thousand miles......:bomb

Noticed this midway through tour to Norway. Coolant left below minimum mark and engine temp cycling up and down between 81 and 90 C. Booked in with Vines to investigate...

My GS TE has done just shy of 20K.

I had the same blue weep on my GS at about 5000 miles. Had a new water pump fitted at next service.
I noticed on the pump box Made in Italy !! Said it all really.
So far the RT is fine.

Out of warranty :(

So my bike is 2yrs 3m old done 16k and I have just seen the 'dreaded blue streak' last twice I have been out on the bike

Called the dealer and was told the following:

1. Sold a lot of these Water Cooled bikes (GS, RT etc) never had one need a new water pump (dont believe that).
2. Wipe it down and keep and eye on it
3. The leak will only happen when its hot and you have been riding a long time (nope short rides last 2 times I have seen it )
4. You wont be losing a lot of fluid (on a 100 mile ride expansion bottle went from Max to Min)
5. If it does need fixing we will only fit a brand new pump we wont just do the seals!

So what would be your advice.....get BMW to do it, wait and see or get independent to replace seals only (assuming he can get them)?

Over all VERY happy with bike but this would be the 7th (recall, issue I have had )

1. New Switch Gear on Left
2. New switch Gear on Right
3. New Rear Brake Pads (600 and 1800 miles!)
4. New Beak as paint peeled off
5. New Throttle
6. Washer on Final Drive

If the bike has been serviced at a main dealer, BMW will probably offer the parts free of charge, as a goodwill gesture, and you pay the labour. That's what I would push the dealer for.:thumb

As above, water pump is a well known failure so push for them to fix as a gesture of goodwill, now this part they don't like you to no, offer to contribute (insist) even a small amount and by doing so will get you 24 months warranty on the replacement.
