I'm about to tackle a 24,000 mile service. As the bike is out of warranty and I'm not overly friendly with the local dealer I was going to save a few squid by servicing myself.

The only concern I have is with the electronic diagnostics end of things. If the bike generally runs well and the plugs are the right colour etc should I worry about not plugging it into Mr. BMW's big money electric machine?

Is home servicing a GS the road to ruin?

Do BMW have me by the short and curlys?

Am I destined to drop £250 coin?

Ask your dealer how much it'll cost to have a Motronic read out - last one I had done (Portland, Oregon) was free.

They have a law here (in all US states, I think) that basically says you can't charge for a service which is essential to the servicing of a bike if it can't be done at home - ie any vehicle should be able to be serviced at home - if a manufacturer introduces a procedure which can only be done at a main dealer, this procedure should be available to the home mechanic free of charge.

Worth asking, I'd think...

Mike:)
