Dont know if anyones interested in this but as an ex horse rider who advocates horses and bikes should get along better, i immediately said yes when i was asked to help out with my bike at a horse sport endurance day.
I met my ex riding partner (with horses that is) at Rhug on the A5 near corwen, to start with marking out the routes a couple of days before the event. 11/16/23 mile rides.

We then headed off around Mynydd Mynyllod area putting the markers up and clearing the bridleways as they were over grown a bit

You all know where this is as many of us have got stuck in the bogs!

This one used to be for the bikers but is now just a bridleway...shame as its beautiful

This bridleway runs in to this lane which many of us know

We stopped in on a friend in Llandrillo who came out with a cuppa in her hand saying shes just made hers so wont be offering us one!!!

On with the job at hand

I then met up with Hugh who im sure alot of you know
P8220017.jpg

and proceeded to ride the course making sure everything was in place (must admit i was a bit nervous at first as never ridden with him before but was a spot on bloke
P8220018.jpg

After completeing and on our way home we passed the entrance to Corwen Wash, he smiled at me and i smiled back....it had to be done
P8220020.jpg

The day arrived and i was up early with the larks ready to met hugh and ride the course again to make sure everything was in place. Hugh was late so i set off by myself as these horses can travel fast and i needed to be ahead of them. When i was nearly done, just coming off the wayfearers section i met these guys in a pickle

One had a puncture and not one of them had a repair kit or inner tube... numpties :blast. But because one of them had recognised me as a 'Dirty Girl' i offered my stuff and politely told them how to mend the puncture. This guy had snapped at his mate whilst mending so i got on my knees, camera infront of him and asked "You always this grumpy in the morning Dear?" fortunately he replied with a smile not a fist

The horse event went very well and no-one got lost but the best part of the day for me was that one of my clients won, barefoot (for those that dont know, i trim horses feet for a living) :101 She did the 23 mile ride in 3hrs 23mins with a heart rate of 42 (thats the horses) Excellent

Ooooh nearly forgot the couple who joined hugh that morning, forget their names.... my age is kicking in! But lovely to meet you and hope to ride with you again sometime

This was a fun couple of days and if anyone would have said i'd spend the day with Jenni on bikes instead of horses, i would have laughed my socks off.......... so horses and bikes can get on together.

BIG thank you to Hugh who has gone round the course afterwards and cleared the signs. Hope to ride with you again soon as it was fun X

Hiya,

I have heard of trail riders and horse enduro's working well together - i know it happens in Cornwall..heard this through the work i am involved with.

Are you a farrier or a horse hoofropodist?, i am interested.

Morticia:)

Im a "Remedial Barehoof Trimmer" qualified with the Switzerland School of Barehoof Trimmers. I considered being a farrier as there is no recognised barehoof certificate in this country but the principles are totally different plus didnt want to spend 4 years studying something i would not want to do ie shoe. My job is more putting the horses body and feet in balance (this includes diet and living conditions) so the body and therefore hooves do what nature intended.

Most horses given the chance, will perform. I also specialise in ailments such as laminitis, cracked/crumbly hooves etc etc. Dont ask me when i've had a drink as i'm obsessed with it as some on this site have experienced:augie

The horse in this report is an ex pacer and had terrible hooves when i met him, i didnt give him much hope as a barefooter (he was 14yrs old then and shod since a 3yr old). 3 years later, he is winning and barefoot, travelling on all terrain:thumb2, The owners done well, im very proud.

Fab

Well done Tina, looks like a fab day out..

Would have loved to done it.. looks like a lot of fun.

Nice to know some people out there don't think we are all mad nutters on bikes..

Beautiful Wales...

I lost my heart somewhere in Wales. -Did you see it, Tina?

-I want to go back! :tears

:) Liv.

Nice one Tina. I helped out recently when the local TRF were asked to supply riders to do collecting and delivering of time cards at an event. Three of us went. It was a full day but we were well looked after in terms of refreshments and the event organisers made a donation to the TRF (we weren't paid, it was 'volunteers required').

We all got along fine, there was certainly no 'attitude' towards us, and I think I'd have to agree, there is more in common between horse and bike riders than many of us would think.

Nice one Tina.
Tell me, did you get to ride trails that normally you wouldn't be allowed to anymore?

Yes, they get permission from land owners etc

No i havent but your more than welcome to stay over in search of it..... be great to see you

Hi Tina,

Really interested in the work you do, it sounds much more interesting than being a farrier.

Are you coming to the Heels on Wheels or Sycho's do? if so hope to catch up for a :beerjug:

Luci

The TRF supply bike riders for a lot of horse trials, you spend the day riding off road, taking scoresheets from the fence judges to the officials. Sometimes there is a bit of lunch supplied and you may even get some pocket money to cover your fuel costs. :thumb

I used to do that a few years ago, at Hanslope.

Unfortunately im not going to either of these as away in France. Im sure we'll met up at some point but dont let me get tipsy....i talk alot about hooves!!
Do you have a horse and considering this? If so my advice is to get on the internet and learn as much as possible before making that dicision as it is more complicated as just taking shoes off. I have only known one perform instantly and ive done alot!?!

Nice to see so many have already helped out at these do's. Good on ya:thumb2

You lucky cow ;) looks like you've got to ride some beautiful tracks there :)

I fully agree with you about horses and bikes working well together, I've been working with the Southern TRF helping support at various events over the last year or two... they are always looking for people to help and support them as are the TRF generally, though generally they are a bit disorganised able connecting interested riders and needing events and remembering to reward the willing... :)

I did a British Endurance event downin Wiltshire somewhere - can't remember where exactly, but it was the same kind of thing as this, you got a chance to ride areas that are normally closed to us bikers and you get to see some amazing views and meet some interesting people.

The majority of the stuff I've done though is support at cross country events, this involved riding the course and collecting cards from each gate and assisting in the case of incidents.

I've enjoyed pretty much every even I've been to and got to meet some great people as a result, well worth it !

If anyone in interested, I believe Southern TRF are looking for one rider to help at an even in Lark Hill on the 20th September - Hondaman would normally post the info up, but seeing as you are on topic, I thought I'd mention it now.

edit : lol... having read all the posts I see that a lot of people have already said this :) sorry...

Horse and bike!

The horse was alive, I read in the text for the picture. -On its way to the horse doc? For pedicure? :nenau

And a toy for biker kids. :thumb2
