Had the bike laid up for quite some time, did all the usual things after prolonged standing including new battery, offside pot misfires and running rough, cat con getting hot very quickly, is this due to petrol vapour from the misfire being taken into the cat ?.My gut feeling says valve sticking is the cause of the rough running oh and the plug was black ???
So Gents any help or ideas, other than sell the bike would be more than welcome

Thanks (Soon to be back on the road, I hope) Stewart :beerjug:

swap plugs side to side first - misfiring plugs would cause unburnt fuel too.

Did you put new fuel in ?

Very very doubtful that a valve is sticking.

Check the throttle cables are seated correctly. If you check just below the black plastic cover on the right hand side, my guess is yours might look like this:

When it should look like this:

If so, simply re-seat the cable...

Unleaded doe not work if left standing too long. Drain and fill with new petrol.

Engine misfires....

These are the quickest way to ruin your catalytic convertor, neat fuel in them does no good what so ever, don't bother buggering about swapping plugs from side to side that'll just tip more fule into the cat! FIND the problem before you run the engine again.

1 check that the throttle cables are seated (as suggested).
2 fit new spark plugs any way.
3 disconnt the fuel injector multi plugs at the injectors (this will prevent further fuel getting into the cylinders)...now you can remove the plugs and fit them into the HT caps and spin the engine over with the plugs earthed to the cylinder heads, you should see some big fat sparks at the plug gap.
4 you will need to reset the ECU as it now thinks its found a fault with the injectors (remove fuse 5 ..I think.. and turn ignition on then turn off and refit fuse)

BUT DON'T KEEP RUNNING THE ENGINE WITH A MISFIRE...if it is a misfire! :)

Spelling error....

Sorry should read fuel and not fule slip of the keys don't you know
Old unleaded could certainly cause your problem and it is quite possible (due to its gumming nature) that the unleaded has stuck up an injector so it is not allowing enough/any fuel through.

You can test for this by popping out the injectors (but still connected to the fuel lines and multi plug connected) and place them into plastic beakers or jam jars. turn on ignition and spin engine over for 5-6 seconds. You should have even quantities of fuel in each container. If you can observe the spray pattern even better because if the injector is clogged/sticking it will be obvious.

To cure a sticking injector you could try injector cleaner from Halfords or similar, alternatively if you feel brave you could try brake cleaner. This will involve soaking the nozzle in the stuff for about an hour or two, or you could take the injectors to a garage that has an injector cleaning rig. This provides power to the injector to hold it open whilst a cleaning fluid is forced through, some use ultra-sonic cleaning as well.

Most injectors are protected from sediment by a tiny filter which is inside the fuel entry of the injector body, this can be teased out with a small impliment and checked for cleanliness/blockage.

Hope you sort the problem

:)

Thankyou all for the contributions
I will now do some serious head scratching and then get down to work, right now I wish I still smoked just so I could have a fag whilst I think things through before starting !!!!!.
Thanks again Stewart :beerjug:

A very lean mixture will certainly make the whole sytem run Hot,
check for air leaks or the vac-takeoff rubbers going missing??.
Also, hot cats are also a symtem off a failing cat??, due to age or fuel contamination(4 star/lrp etc). what fuel do you use??.

Oh no.....

Don't start smoking (again) until you have finished messing about with the fuel!:(
