Hello all,

i have a brand new R1200RT - 2013 model with 1100 miles on it now, and since new, when you pull up after riding, and the engine is up to temperature, you get a waft of hot oil smell. It has been back to BMW North Oxford and they acknowledge that it does this, but to date cannot find any signs of a leak. The bike has been in there for a week whilst they investigate and discuss with BMW. in the interim, they have loaned me a similar bike: R1200RT 2013 model with 600 miles on the clock, and it does exactly the same thing: a waft of hot oil smell. Neither bike seems to be using excessive amounts of oil.

So, I am unsure where this leaves me. I dont accept that a brand new bike (of any manufacturer) should do this. My 1150RT with 70,000 miles on it left a fine mist of oil over my boots from the cylinders but it never made a smell in this way. I am not happy that I have spent the thick end of £16k and it does this - a problem in waiting? I am pursuing with the dealer and BMW.

Has anyone else had this with their bike, RT or GS or otherwise? I would be interested to hear from you and whether you have looked into this?

Thanks Piers

We have 6 r1200rtp's at work and all did/do this. All are 13 plates and between 100 & 700 miles.

Possible heavy breathing ooer missus no not that, from the crank case breather?
That is unless they have CCB back into the induction side?

Never the less, new = without fault

oil smell/residue/leak and even what I've described above would be cause for concern.

Keep at em, and don't be fobbed off by overfilled bollox.:D

If there are no leaks, and not using excessive amounts of oil then it is nothing to worry about.
Same thing happened on my GS.
Dealer had been aware of this on many other new bikes and apparently it is something to do with the cat when brand new.
Mine has now stopped and is fine.

In anycase, the warranty will kick in if it were to be anything more serious.

So I have collected the bike and they have deep cleaned the bike without the panels on to remove any oil residue (possibly applied during the assembly process) from around the engine and oil cooler, and they also reduced the oil level by 0.2 litres to bring it under maximum. So far on a 50 mile ride home, the oil smell has disappeared. I will keep you posted. As regards warranty, the bike has a two year warranty and as I have raised this issue during the warranty period and it has been escalated back to BMW via the PUMA system (whatever that is), I am told that this will remain on the system and should any issues occur that are related to this, it *should* be a continuation of the warranty claim....we shall see... However, it is definitely not leaking oil or burning excessive amounts so I am going to relax and enjoy what is a superb bike.

Thanks for contributions all - I will post any updates.

My 2012 RT did it as well, but it ceased after about 2000 miles.

Smelly

My 2010 GS does sometimes smell like a classic bike, never uses oil though,so i put it down to BMW design(it's my first BMW).Dare i say, it's been 100% reliable and i use NOG.
My 2008 Fireblade used lots of oil but no smell!
Ride it lots, get your invested money worth out of it.:rob

Hot oil...possible cause

Stripped down the rt today to fir ptt and garmin. I have had the hot oil smell occasionally and today found a tiny bit of oil in the air filter box. I am guessing its been breathed out by the engine after a previous overfill.
Cleaned it out and smell has gone
