Hot start issue

Hi all,

My first BMW bike and not a good start. I just picked up my 2013 LC GS and rode back from Leicester to Grantham, 35 miles, at a fair old pace - all good. Stationary traffic in Grantham and lots of stop/start/filtering fan on but bike OK. Stopped and went to get some food, about 20mins. Jumped back on the bike and it started but lumpy, seemed like one cylinder only (if that's possible).

It wouldn't start properly so I contacted BMW recovery after a while. 20 mins waiting and I thought I'd try again - started fine. Completed the journey, all three miles, OK. BMW told to stop the process.

A search through did not find anything in particular. As you can understand I'm a little concerned that it might keep happening. Is this a known issue with a resolution?

Thanks

Mines a 13 too. Not ever had a starting problem hot or cold. Was it raining by any chance.. just thinking wet where it shouldnt be.
Also tempremental on weak battery. Id test if ya can. Bike could av been stood for a while etc.

Not wet this afternoon. Battery does not seem low on power. I'll stick my optimate on it. Started again fine this evening, headlight on OK. It was definitely heat related. The only other change was I put it on the centre stand:nenau

Definitely an issue here. When hot, then stopped for 10 mins (or thereabouts), it will not start properly. Leave it a while and it's ok. Happened today when out then as a test when I got home. I spoke to a couple of BMW service guys who both said "not heard of that one". I guess it's time to get it to one one of them. Its bound not to play up when they have it.

Other than that enjoying the bike. The bad gear change for me is 2 to 3, others are ok. I've just ordered a Maier guard to keep the crap off the bike and my legs.

Check out your side stand switch, this is the switch that immobilizes the bike if the stand is down when the bike is in gear.

A similar thing happened with my brother's new GS-LC just after he'd popped his first wheelie.

Although it looked visibly fine it was not fully connected, all I did was to push the plug fully downwards into the socket, there was a click as it snapped into place. Never a problem since that one time.

The plug had not been clicked in properly from new, it needs a firm push to click it home.

You will find this connector right next to the side stand pivot point.

Hope this helps.

Good luck

Thanks, will have a look. Did your brothers run but badly, like one cylinder?

it can't be the side stand switch. If that failed in the "down" position , that still would not prevent the bike starting in neutral.

the OP's problem is that the bike starts , but ran hesitantly.

with the amount of electronics on this bike (throttle by wire) , the OP needs to get the bike connected to the computer to dig up faults and if none , maybe a throttle reset/recalibration.

hope it gets sorted.

Pistole, You are correct I must give myself x10 hell-mary's and concentrate on my reading skills, on second thoughts make that x11.:blast

Yes my bro's bike would run but stopped every time he put it in gear but with the stand in the up position.

Back to the drawing board methinks.

No probs. Thanks for having a go. It's workshop time. Just got to find the time.

Took the bike to Balderstones this morning - a bit nippy at 0 deg C - and had three BMW maintenance fixes, throttle and two others (can't recall, washer and someat else).

The original reason was to look at the Hot start problem, well as sods law dictates it wouldn't play up but..... the mechanic did find the right hand side coil pack connector not fully connected. They reckon that this is most likely to be the issue. Sounds good to me. Fingers crossed.:thumb2

I had this exact issue with a 2008 Adventure. Really struggled to get going when hot and left for 5 mins, no problem when cold. Replaced the battery (even though was charging OK) with a Motobatt and no more problems :)
