Normally I stop either in the UK the night before a crossing (to ensure I get a decent fry-up in the morning) or press on to Laon or further...

...but this time I need to do an evening crossing, so don't really want to do more than an hour on the French side. Anyone recommend a good bike-friendly hotel that's handy for the A26 (I have to get south in a hurry next day) and within an hour of the Eurotunnel?

Bethune, straight off the motorway and choice of campanile or premiere class. Not great but very convenient. 2mins in the morning back on the motorway

Might be me, but which of the hotels are you recommending?? I have used the Ibis although if you get there late you might not get parked as it can be very busy!

Yes I stay at the Ibis in the center of St Omer, The restaurant serves food until 10.00 pm, or plenty of other options in the square. If you call in advance they will save a space for your bike immediately on the left as you enter the yard, although I have always found space available.
Here is a better link.

John.

the under cover parking area at the Ibis St Omer was cordoned off for the Annecy Wappites on the Aug BH weekend. However, Bethune is reachable in your hour as thornley says and means you will be 50km further south at the start of day 2.

The Ibis, St Omer is easy. Plenty of choice of cheap eateries in the square. They are reluctant to cordon off the under cover area just for one bike, but you never know.

If you want a bit more 'French', try:

I have stayed in both, several times.

The suggestions of Bethune are fine.... Depending on what time you land in France. The automatic loss of one hour time difference makes a big difference. Call it 60 miles or more if you are tonking down the motorway. There is not much point going the extra miles to Bethune, only to arrive at 23:30 with the restaurant shut. If you really must, take a sandwich.

Thanks chaps - couple of very good options there! It's not a solo run, so I'll put it to the vote.

If it's a bunch of you, you really cannot go wrong with the Ibis in St Omer.

OK it's a generic corporate hotel but everything works and it's suitably easy. They might pretend that you can't pre-order a cordoned off area to park your flock of bikes but you can... Or at least you'll find that they have when you get there.

St Pol?

Not strictly speaking a hotel but a nice B and B run by Brits Sue and Paul. Paul is a builder and a biker. Both nice folks who will give you a warm welcome.

They don't supply evening meals, or they didn't last time I was there, but if you haven't eaten there are a few places in St. Pol to eat. It's a 10 minute walk.

We usually use the IBIS at citie europe its close to the tunnel and has secure parking,
There is a good in house retaurant that serves that and the other two hotels close by.
