How can I get a quieter exhaust?

Fitting an Akrapovic silencer to my 2010 GS has helped make the exhaust noise more bearable, but I would still be interested in less of it.

What are my options for quieter exhausts? I believe the 2004-9 standard exhaust is quieter, but the end can won't fit my twin cam - is there a link pipe or something which would allow it to be fitted? Or do I have to find a full system from a pre 2010 bike?

Thanks in advance. Noisy exhausts are fine for the odd blast, but start to irritate on a 60 mile daily motorway commute!
 
You give the impression that you only changed the end can silencer.

Assuming all the other pipwework, catalyst and other gubbinry is standard, why not just fit the standard BMW can for your make and model of bike.... Maybe even the one you (perhaps) took off?

The standard can on a twin cam bike (which I took off) is actually noisier than the BMW Akrapovic alternative, believe it or not. Dealer confirmed this to me, as well.

I do always wear earplugs - just wondering how to reduce some of the ambient noise in the first place.
 
That is correct. I have a love hate relationship with the stock twin cam exhaust. Nice around town but on a run its a pain even with ear plugs.

My previous bike was a single cam (2009) with Akro can and Remus headers. With the bung in was quieter than the twin cam.

I see that Wapping has dived in head first with his usual ill informed patronising shyte.

ive had 5 twin cams now:blast and the exhaust note i have found to be a little noisey on a long run,my solution is a remus hexacone with the baffle in,nice sound but at high cruising speed not too intrusive.
 
To be fair after years of putting aftermarket exhausts on bikes to make them sound a bit fruitier my world has now turned upside down.

I'm going to have a lie down in a darkened room.

I found the standard exhaust on my TC really intrusive, couldn't quite pinpoint why, it just seemed the resonance was wrong. I removed the butterfly and servo and put my old pre TC headers and remus end can on the bike, a massive improvement.

Good luck with your hunt.

After years of noisy exhausts, I now just stick with whatever the manufacturer cares to lob on. If it makes a noise, great. If it doesn't, great too. I think I'll lie down in a darkened room, too.

Google db killers; lots of folks do them, different sizes and fittings/styles.

I've used various sorts over the years on bikes used for laning. They take the 'edge' off the exhaust note and are inexpensive so could be worth a try.

Thanks - they look like they'd do the trick for not much dosh!

I've dropped one of the manufacturers a line to see what they offer.

the stats would disagree, he obviously confirmed this as you were buying an akrapovic:blast

i have the akrapovic and with the muffler in the decibels if i recall are exactly same as stock 92 point summit:rob

I'd already bought it s/h off Ebay, so there was nothing in it for him - it was purely the Service Manager's impression.

Even if there is technically no difference in loudness, the quality of the din is slightly less tedious.


Anyway, the Akrapovic looks like it will take a 2" db killer as mentioned in one of the previous posts, which the daft standard exhaust won't, so job done, I hope!
 
anybody taken the end cap off a twin cam standard exhaust? if so, what's inside? can it be packed with more sound absorbing material?
 
Take a look at my thread for the MIVV end can, with the baffle in it is a vast improvement on standard

not at all - after some long distance riding the past few weeks, I've had enough! Not only do I miss my '09 SOHC which was much quieter, but realised that I could have been allowed in more game reserves if the can was dampened... so atching this with keen interest! :augie

Agreed. I've recently put the stock can back on to replace the MIVVY, and heck I forgot how noisy (and heavy) the stock one is!
 
I had the same scenario, so I fitted the baffle out of the pre twin cam Akra -it's much longer - now nice n quiet.:aidan !
