You ship the bike to Dublin & I'll run it in for you over the winter while mine's err... resting. I'll send it back in Spring with the correct oil level & all run in for you complete with the latest must-have accessory; A thick coat of genuine road filth. It'll look great I promise :thumb

Or you could just look at the sight glass under the left cylinder, but that may not be reliable. Dunno about the manual mind. :nenau

Try this....

Centre stand on flat level ground. Run the bike for a few minutes until it reaches normal operating temperature. Switch off the engine and leave for about 5 minutes.

Get on your hands and knees on the left hand side of the bike and find the sight glass near the underside of the left hand cylinder.

If it's dark then there's possibly too much in there. If it's dark at the bottom and clear at the top or half and half then it's ok. :thumb

Skip.

Thanks for the info!!

Is there just one oil dain nut? From what I can see its a torx screw on the bottom of the sump next to the oil filter. Am i correct?

There is another net that looks like a drain hole below the gearbox. Is the engine and gearbox oil separated?

Oi mate if you dont know how to check the oil (presuming you joined the forum in september when you bought the bike?)on your bike i wouldnt be fiddling with actually changing the oils-best leave it to the grown ups
:cool

Nah, its definetly me, Deano!! :bounce1

I started looking into buying a GS in sept and after readin all your posts decided to take the plunge!!! Just got the bike yesterday morning and havent really had a chance to have a good look around it. Been too busy riding it!! :thumb

I've gotta get myself a Haynes manual for the GS, as its my first BMW bike. My last bike was a Ducati Monster 900 and I did all the work on it myself!

After owning that bike, I NEVER want to see a polishing cloth again in my life!!

Anyway, back to the topic, did I describe the correct drain nut? Roughly how many litres of oil does the engine hold? Anyone have any favourite brands? (bet this question starts a firery topic)

Cheers!

Hey Deano how do you put up with the crap weather your obviously having in Dubai judging by your photo?

ps like the ducati-sweet :thumb

Bet that Ducati was useless after dark though :rob

[Edit: Hang on... I've just spotted a light. Nah, still useless I rekon ;) ]

That's art!

Great Monster :clap . I want it!

Still regret selling my 900. Not quite as trick as yours but close. I'm kind of looking for another one but because the one I sold was mint, I know it will be difficult.

Got an S4 after that but it wasn't as good so spent most of my time on the 916SP.
