It will be pretty obvious if it's not in the right place. If you turn the knurled knob and the rubber bit is not flush with the speedo (ie on the wrong side of the clip, it will rub against the knob (phnar phnar) which will make it harder to turn. I've spoken to some people and their rubber piece didn't come loose. Mine did, but if I'd just literally taken just a second or two to push the bloody thing back against the speedo at the start, it would have saved me undoing the lot again.
Did you drop the bolts though?
