How good are the 1100's

Taipan, you're ex-KTM dude, right?

Then reliability issues on BMs are 'kids game' compared with KTs, go for 1150 if you like it, i think 1200 is even very reliable in "KTM-terms" :)

Cheers, Margus aka poor student needs reliability - 1100 don't rust and don't broke down that often as newer ones unfortunately do... that dude's opinion on your 1100 was right. :)

If you look at Johns profile it lists his current bikes as a 99 1100 and a Zed thou. The mans obviously got appaling taste as well as being Scottish so I wouldn't worry :D

lol @ Rob :D Yes lavjohn, I bought the 1100 mentioned at the start of the thread and it's seen plenty of action including 1500 miles of Scottish coast, 3500 miles in Europe and a 400 mile weekly commute since then. Touch wood the only problems I've had were a knackered battery, duff rev counter and fried rear ABS sensor, all replaced under the used bike warranty. I was thinking of buying a 1200 after sampling a ST 1200 for a week, but I'll see how I feel after I do Ireland and Spain on the 1100 this year :thumb

btw Rob, it's a Debben tuned 1977 Zed, not one of those modern plastic ones ;)

hi johnc.ive just bought a 1100 1998 in go faster red.hope mines going to be a good investment to. not got it on the road yet but im looking forward to it. ive just sold a r80 1990 to buy this so i hope i made the right move? i dont think many people bother about the miles on the clock as long as its got most of the service history.

I recently heard at a conference that the west is 'luxury goods saturated'. Kewl expression.

So what of the 1100? In terms of what weekend warriors really need the R800GS and R100GS airheads are more than sufficient. The 1100, 1150 and 1200 arose not from riders needs to transverse the Ghobi desert but of BMW's need to launch new products. Did Ted Simon travel the world on a rambo bike or a bog standard Triumph? His comment that using a standard petrol tank and running out of fuel every hundred miles gave him the opportunity to have greater interaction with locals etc.. has remained in my memory for 10 years. 43 litre tanks riding at 80mph on paved roads aint really what Ted had in mind was it?

A 1989 R100GS is more than capable of taking you around the world at short notice. The 1100 was a new generation update and supposedly more capable in all departments than the airhead and the 1150 and 1200 developments of that. Noticeably, the price has increased and yet despite such problems as front headlight bulbs blowing, folks mange to complete round the world trips.

In fact oilheads are so reliable that people have stopped 'touring' and instead use them to travel the longest possible distance in the shortest possible time.

Buy the 1100, its way up to the job.

Pretty good I'd say..

I prefer my Adventure to the 1100, but mine had over 70,000 miles on it when I sold it, and the ADV was brand new. As far as their ability to do big mileages and be reliable, this bloke's seems pretty bloody good to me.
