How good is a Midland G7?

I bought a pair of Midland G7's to use with my Autocom after recommendation from Autocom. Within 2 months both radios had packed up and I was told that there has been a problem with the off/on switch with the G7's

Anyway I managed to get my money back and was recommended the Intek MT5050's by a friend who got one from these guys.

He told me about this easy modification that increases the power to 4 watts too, gives them a much better range! :thumb

Might be too late - but I have an MT-3030, so thought I would share my experience:

1. Yes very easy to "trip" up to the full 4w power. However, there is little point unless the other person ALSO has a 4w radio! Otherwise he would hear you, but you won't hear him!
2. Audio quality is better than the cheaper radios (the ones that come in packs), but I still found myself repeating myself (I had it connected via a Starcom Mototcycle Intercom)
3. Build quality is very good

My advice - go for a Kenwood KT-3201. I took that step and my friends were amazed by the increase in quality.
Plus you can get an adaptor so you can power it from the bike.

The Kenwood's are not cheap - but you can often get really good bargains from eBay. Don't worry about having a used one - as the build quality of the Kenwood meets US millatary standard - so it would be really unlucky to get a duff one.

Meanwhile if you really want a MT-5050, let me know and I will sell you mine!!

Thanks for the advice verwoodspring, but since my original post I have purchased an Intek MT5050. I'm really pleased with the radio and the range. There are a couple of us who use them with the autocom system and they work fantasically well, better than any other radios i've used (Alan 465r and Motorola TA200).

I did consider a Kenwood radio, but just felt I could not justify spending over £100.

Thanks for your offer of the Intek MT5050 (or Intek MT3030). I would suggest you sell yours on Ebay if you still have it. The Intek radios really seem to hold their value, especially if they have been modfied.

Going to do a euro trip in two days. I went to fire up the midland g7's (which were only used for 5 weeks in total 2 years ago) Batteries were still working but I found the on/off switches were buggy. Causing the radios to be rendered useless. A Frantic rush today to buy new radios led us to... buy another set of midland g7's because we've already got the connectors for the autocoms for them. I hope that my second batch of these work out better then my first batch.

I wonder if someone from Midland can comment on mine and Bob's experiences with the buggy on/off switch problem. I don't want to have this problem again the next time I need them.
