Mine (2006 1200GS) runs at '4 little bars' above the 'big bar' at the bottom - looks as though there are only a couple left above where it sits.

I may be a bit paraniod, but I 'think' it runs hotter now I have the Runus headers and car fitted.

Any thoughts on the usual running temp (it seems constant once it's up to temp)

If it's running OK and not overheating, then I don't think you've got much to worry about. Check what happens when the weather warms up though and monitor your oil consumption too. If you are in York now, you could go to Squires Cafe in Sherburn tomorrow night to meet some of the group members.
Best wishes.

3 bars generally here in a somewhat cooler climate. more in traffic.

got to 6 bars in that there london once

I got it up to max once in heavy traffic through Alton on a hot day(mid-rideout) and the oil warning light kept coming on at tickover although there were no unusual noises accompanying it. It was running on 20W/40 oil. On arrival at SPC the light had gone out at idle due to some cool air across the oil cooler.

Since then I'm on 20W/50 oil but haven't had a hot enough day to repeat the experience. I'm emigrating to Aus and taking my bike with me so I hope it can cope with the heat of Western Australia.

So it looks like mine is fine - once warm, it tends to stay at 4 bars irrespective of the outside temberature (between 14degC and 32degC, but can get down to freezing early on a winter morning). Traffic is heavy here, but I don't temb to get 'stuck' in it - 'lane splitting' is normal here - given a chance even the mini-bus taxi's try it!
