I know the ADV shaft has longer splines than the standard one which allows it to work more safely in a more extended (raised suspension) state, but do these differences also mean that it won't compress to as short a length as the standard one? Has anyone had the two together to compare them?

I'm asking this because I've had Wilbers 40mm lower shocks on my standard 1150. If I were to consider buying an Adventure (for various reasons not related to suspension height) would the Adventure shaft prevent me lowering the bike to 40mm lower than a non-Adv bike?

Interesting that you say this, as my understanding was that both shafts are identical, the only difference is that BMW uses a different part number to differentiate the bikes. When I put longer suspension on the GS, I brought this concern up with my local dealer and he showed me two identical shafts, one from the GS and the other from the A. I would be happily to stand corrected.

This is an old thread when I was contemplating options, note Steptoe's response a few comments in...

Interesting, because I'd read the same as Colban:

Hmmm...i could have sworn i had read on here in the past that the GSA had a different arrangement to cope with the extra articulation of the susension.
Are the lengths of the Cardon shaft the same but the GSA has a longer splined section on the bevel end U/J?.

But my specific requirements are that the Adv shaft in its shortest state not be longer than the standard one, which Steptoe has confirmed:

The drive shafts are identical for the ADV and standard GS.
I know because i've bought both of them brand new, with the different part numbers. And they're identical. :augie

...so even if there are internal differences in that the Adv has longer splines it doesn't matter to me.

Thanks for the link - I'd searched but not found that one :thumb2
