How low can you go - Brake Pads

My 2016 GSA has done 8500 miles, following various comments on here I have been concerned about ensuring my pads are changed on a timely basis. At 6000 miles I asked the dealer to carefully check and give me an idea of how much life there was left in the OEM pads.

They said you should check again at about 8000 miles, I have looked at the rear pads and they look like they have masses of friction material left.

I will check the front pads tomorrow but I wondered how much friction material is considered to be the minimum.

I did 19000 on the rears and the fronts are still good

I was always advised, replace at 7/8th wear. Which obviously relates to original thickness, this can vary between different manufacturers.

There is minimum thickness allowed. Find this out and replace as the minimum approaches. JJH
 
To the cutouts? To be honest you are better off removing the pads as sighting them in the calliper doesn't give you a true picture of wear, plus the callipers and pads would appreciate the occasional clean! You will still be able to brake even if they wear down further but new discs are a lot more expensive than new pads and with just the backing material you may completely lose braking. It's not worth the risk.
 
Down to the cut outs my friend, but take them out and clean the crud out of the cutouts to get an accurate view of them.

Trouble is that some pads do not come with cutouts. If in doubt take them out and have a proper look. Sometimes they wear at an angle and can be down to the metal at one end.

That's kind Nigel, but should be OK. Will probably whip them out and give them a clean or replace tomorrow. I've had the new Brembos ready for months.

Can I assume you don't do a lot of town riding? My rear (BMW OE) pads have needed changing at 6K intervals on my GSA LC. It does seem to be the London type commuting that knocks them out. At 14K there is loads still left on the fronts.

Hi yes my daily commute is pretty much no braking and weekends tend to be longer runs with plenty of twisty,s so do get to use the brakes then, the fronts seem to last far longer than the rears on all of the GS models Though, I would have thought they would wear first?
PS mine is a 2016 GSA

I hardly ever ride in towns, except for blood biking and Unity Support Rider duties.

8677 miles since March.

I Think the rear pads are about half worN. I was surprised to see that it had Brembo pads fitted from new.

Why would you be surprised, they are Brembo callipers

because in other threads people had said they were BMW OEM pads
 
Don't forget the bike has a linked braking system, so when you use the front brake the rear will come on as well, but if you just use the rear brake,then only the rear will come on, so the rear brake gets more wear.

Exactly and the originals are Brembo same as the Calipers. The OEM tyres are Michelin or whatever.
like most bikes these days they have all gone for the best supplier available for their brakes which happens to be Brembo

OEM is just whatever is supplied from new not who made it.

Don't forget the bike has a linked braking system, so when you use the front brake the rear will come on as well, but if you just use the rear brake,then only the rear will come on, so the rear brake gets more wear.

Also when you squeeze the front lever the rear is applied fractionally before the front AFAIK. This contributes to increased wear on the rear.
 
MOT regs specify minimum friction material of 1mm for sintered pads and 1.5mm for other types.
