Being new to all things GS, I am unsure of the going rate for what I am after.

I have been watching this forum, Autotrader, MCN and Flea-Bay for several months now to try to get an idea of what I should be paying for a GS1200 with under 20k miles, full luggage and as many extras as possible ie coms etc.

I currently have a Mamola Rep which I want to keep the miles down on, so looking for a GS for the longer UK, Ireland and European trips.

I would like to be able to stretch to a GSA but I doubt if what I have will be enough (7k cash).

Basically guys I am looking for your collective thoughts on the subject. There are a couple of bikes currently on E-bay, one of which is a 06 model with 13k miles, FSH (just has 12k done) full luggage, coms and a couple of extras. It can be secured for less then 6k.

Is this a reasonable figure, or should I spend a little more and try to get an Adventure?

There is an Adventure in MCN for 7.7k. Is that about as cheap as they are at the moment?

I am not the smallest of guys (6ft and 19 stone) and my concern is that the standard GS may appear too small when 2 up and touring with full kit.

I do not require the bikes for commuting as I work abroad, so they are purely used for fun and touring.

I put over 4k on the Mamola in just 2 months last summer and caused hellish stone chips to the Belly-pan, forks and nose. Not ideal and a repair process I dont want to go through again next year.

Anyhow guys, please feel free to cast your thoughts and comments my way.

Thanks in advance.

Leasky.

Without hearing the 'mine is better' screams, for this sort of cash have you thought about the 1150GS? I have been running a 2002 model for a few years now and I love the bike. Solid, reliable workhorse that I use for commuting, touring and just about everything.

The 1200 is a good bike, no doubts, but you do go up a price bracket. At 6'1" I am more than at home on the standard 1150GS with full kit and occasionally my goodly wife on the back. I have upgraded the suspension, added an HiD kit and a bigger screen, but that is about it. You can get a very good model significantly cheaper than a 1200 and it will do everything you could want. The other advantage is that most of the depreciation has already been worn away.

I have toured the alps extensively, across France, Germany, Italy and down into the Balkans and it's never put a foot wrong.

There are plenty of other threads on the topic, have a scout around and you will get a flavour of the depth of opinion.

My 2007 GS is up for grabs for £7650.. ABS model with heated grips and trip computer and clear indicators.. 600,6000 and anual services at Ocean BMW.. currently on 7500 miles tax and warranty til 20th june 2009.

full BMW vario luggage
full titanium Remus exhaust (not just the can) and unused orriginal BMW system
Enging bars with the lower bar too not just the front loop
Spoked wheels AND a second alloy rear wheel and its shorter wheel bolts with a second tyre (this makes tyre management easy)
Garmin Zumo waterproof bike sat nav mounted and wired with full europe mapping was planning to remove this but it's negotiable.

had this bike since may2008 with 324... yes 324 miles!!!! so all the miles are mine and the thing has been faultless.

Your Mamola rep. Why don't you get some of the clear plastic protective film for the areas prone to stone chipping. My 1200 was a BMW dealer ex-demo bike and came with this pre-fitted and it does make a difference in terms of protecting the more exposed panels. You don't need to buy a pre-cut set which costs oodles, as there are suppliers of tape whcih you can self cut: http://www.helicoptertapedirect.co.uk/
