Just been into Park lane BMW to drop off my 05 1200GS for the 12000mile service. They have called me back to say I have a leaky gear box seal and the cost to replace seals will be £800! Once I got back to my feet I told him I'd leave it for now! I would love to hear from people ASAP (whilst they still have the bike with them) as to what they think about the price / safety of my unwanted situation. Thanks

They have to split the bike in half to do it. If it's that bad a leak, take it to an independant and get it done at cheaper labour rates.

Shouldn't be a safety issue unless it's really bad.

Well I guess it isn't very bad as I park in the exact same spot everyday and there is no sign of an oil leak.

.....and if you're gonna keep the bike and you do a lot of commuting, you may wish to have new clutch friction plates fitted depending on wear.

Two points,

1) '05 bike with only 12,000 miles:eek: The seal started leaking out of boredom.

2) Steptoe and 1200's:D in the same sentence?

Yes tell me about it! Iv'e done 7,000 of those in the 10 months since I bought it.
i careful previous owner. When I picked it up he kept on about the long way round and how the red bike was the Boreman bike. :ymca

I had this on my 05 GS and Bahnstormer got BMW to go 50 50 on the cost I and it was cheaper only had to pay £200 so get them to ask :)
PS mine started leaking at 6000

I don't think you mentioned which gearbox seal is gone, clutch or shaft side? Huge difference in the work involved. If it's clutch side then you may contaminate the plates and end up with clutch slip.

Have a horrible feeling mine is doing the same thing- not much visible sign, but run your finger under the gearbox join there is a small weep of oil. It does not affect the clutch in any way and has been doing it for at least 2500 miles.

Mine is a 2006 GSA last BMW serviced at 12k around 18m-2yr ago, home serviced, now got 21k on it. Have the following options- what of the following actions should be best

1. Chase BMW for a contribution towards (what are my chances)
2. Let Roy Gardner replace it
3. Do it myself to save cost- am fairly handy and have rebuilt bikes (mainly 250 two strokes) from completely stripped down.
4. Just leave it

Am hesitant due to the amount of wiring / plumbing / clutch centering tools etc- how difficult is it to do yourself??

I got the gearbox seals changed at the last service (07 18,000 mile service) (they were leaking and needed to be changed according to the dealer). Only cost 140 euro, including labour. :nenau

That was with Joe Duffy BMW, Dublin.

I had this on an 05 GS about 12 months out of warranty and North Oxford Garage got it all through on warranty FOC for me. At the time the mileage was somewhere around 15,000 miles. It included a new clutch as well because of possible contamination. I was surprised but delighted at the time.

Why not try phoning another dealer with your chassis number to hand and talk it through to see what they think. My recollection was that NOG told me there was a faulty batch of seals from their supplier and they could simply check my chassis number to see if it was made when the faulty ones were around.

Worth a try!

if the the above doesn't work it's a fairly straight forward d.i.y job. You should be able to do it easily in a weekend taking your time. If you do end up going this way get hold of a copy of the reprom, which details the whole job.

Our DIY skills must be on a whole different level! From what I gather I need to chop the bike in half, replace some seals (the easy bit) and then put it back together. Oh and then ride it!:blast

Now if someone would like me to give it a go on their bike first? Maybe in a work shop rather then in the gutter outside my house? oh and they would have to do the test ride!

I went to see Steptoe today and although he is a busy man and I will have to wait, I'd rather book it in with an expert.
:beerjug: to all those who contributed.
