How strong is the silver front panel underneath the screen on an 1150?

Heya,

I have a ram handlebar mount for my iphone that I use as a gps with tomtom software. I'd prefer to have it more central above the dash. I saw the mount from migsel but can't afford it. I was thinking of taking the silver panel off, drilling two holes and bolting the ram ball to that, so that the mount sits above the dash. It'll be more protected and in better line of sight.

My concern is whether, although the mount and phone aren't particularly heavy, whether there's enough strength to support this option in the silver panel which looks to be just a plastic piece.

Before taking it all apart could anyone tell me if they think this is a reasonable option? The alternative would be to make up an aluminium bar that mounts on the screen bolts and comes over the top but this would be more difficult and cost more than the two bolts I would currently need to mount the ram ball.

Cheers,

Justin.

I would have thought it would be strong enough....it's fairly thick and the curved shape makes it stronger than if it was flat as well.

As an alternative, stick an ad in the 'wanted' section for a Migsel mount...you may well find one for sale by an owner who's downgrading from an 1150 to a 1200 for some reason :augie

Thanks for that, I might just go ahead and try it, worst case I have to put a couple of bolt heads in to hide the holes.

Good thought about the mount but as I'm broke right now I think I'll pass, they're £75 new so even second hand it's more than I can justify at the moment. A couple of bolts sounds better.

When I'm working again and have the girlfriend through her test and on a 650 we're planning on coming out to morocco with you guys, it looks an absolute hoot.

Cheers,

Justin.

Fit some penny washers on both sides of the plastic to spread the load as widely as you can, and TBH if I were doing it, I'd use a sandwich of silicone sealant or similar to try and stop the shocks cracking the plastic as well, when you hit bumps etc :thumb

Somebody has already done it and Posted with pictures within the last couple of months :thumb2

I drilled mine for an alarm LED. The plastic seemed to be softer material than it apeared - the drill shot through a bit quicker than expected :eek Worked out OK though, just take it easy with the drill bit if you do go for it, might be better with a blunter used drill bit than a brand new sharp edged one:nenau

i fitted my tom tom mount there fitted an aluminium plate below to spread the load problem is the sat nav shakes about a bit and makes it hard to read going to refit mine to the bars
