I have just acquired this great piece of billet aluminium from an obliging forumite:

.....and here is what I hope my bike will look like:

My question is wha is the neatest power mounting for the Zumo550? I am a complete klutz with electrics so will probably have to pay the dealer to do the work...............unless it is really easy.

Any advice or tips would be gratefully accepted and obsequiously acknowledged :bow

Cheers all.

Think about the mounting point. Can you reach it easily on the move? Can you read the screen? Especially if you wear glasses. Varifocal lenses can be tricky. I used the standard Zumo mounting kit on the standard bars and the Zumo sits where my left hand can reach it easily without stretching. Just dandy :thumb

Canbus plug, there's a sticky on how to make one that'll fit your bike, and is IMO the best and easiest way of doing it.

It is so easy. That's for sure. :thumb2

You can get the plug from BuMW Battersea.

If you don't want to make one yourself, you can buy a complete power lead from TouraTechorNippy Norman (I forget which) for about £40.

EDIT

Oldrascal, I see you are in London.... If you get the plug from BuMW and have the Garmin bare ended power lead, I will make it for you.

Cheers mate but I am in Chcihester so Bahnstormers are my nearest dealers. Am I right in assuming that once I have paired the BMW canbus cable with the Zumo powercord, the canbus cable plugs into a socket somewhere? Or does it also need wiring into the bike's power supply?

Cheers

"Paired" = soldered / crimped then yes. BTW TT and others make one for about £40.

Yes there is a socket for it if you've used what is called the "canbus plug".

No, see above.

And, the socket is in varying positions, have a search through the 1200GS area for 2008 GSA and canbus plug. Locations I've heard for it is by the headstock on the pre '08 bikes and in the area of the oil cooler on '08 bikes.

Yes I can second that. After spending hours taking off all the bloody pannels on my 08 GS, and hunting high and low for the elusive plug socket, behind the head stock!!! I decide to double check on it`s position, luckily I found another thread with a piccie showing it under the oil cooler!!!!.So off to the garage I trudge, and there as clear as daylight is the little feller!!!!! errrrrrrrrrrrr how many hours waisted???.Still at least I know how to take it all apart and hopefully put it back together lol, gives me a chance to make a nice neat job of the wireing I suppose.
