I just can't get over how many uses that auxilliary socket has.. what a great idea from BMW... Its even in a nice and accessible place.... good stuff.....:thumb2

I agree the socket is useful, and ideally placed for plugging my GPS in. Its not so useful for heated clothing or anything to the rear of the bike. Its 7A capacity is just enough to power my Jacket but the cable droops onto the tank and causes scuffing very quickly. I now have a dedicated jacket plug running off the battery.
I wish the plug was as well made as the socket, its the same old Bakelite thing designed in the 60s. A genuine BMW plug is about £12.00, the cheaper plugs off e-bay at £5.00 do not have a cable clamp so the wires are constantly pulling out of the small terminal screws. It looks very open to water yet this has never caused a problem..
My previous BMWs had the socket down by the gear lever, this really was a poor position and the standard plug was always catching your boot. I think a 90 degree short plug is available but I have never seen one.

What I find less useful is the fact that it turns itself off when you turn off the ignition I have a lead light that I use in my tent and I don't want to leave the ignition on all the time, my old Dakar did not do this. Does anyone know if this can be overridden?

Just plumb a new one straight to the battery?

I have plugged a laptop charger and and mp3 player charger into my aux socket.... I wonder what things other people have plugged in there?

I soon as you do a bit of adventure riding with camping, you'll want to put in a socket which is direct from the battery.

If you want to draw a bit of power at a camp site (charge your mobile for example), then you need your keys in the ignition and your lights on.

I have an Extra plug off the battery, handy when camping. My extra plug is on an instrument cover behind the clocks.
