HP2 Adventure

I just keep getting drawn back to this thread :blast
No matter how much I tell myself I should stick with my lovely SE I keep finding myself looking at all things HP2.
Apart from the thing being way too fast for me and me never being able to do it justice I still can't help thinking it maybe an ok bike for me.
I don't do high mileage, most of the GS events I go too are in the south, I always travel light so the smaller zegas would be ok with some soft luggage, I want to do Northern Spain and the Pyranees next year and theres no real road miles there for me.
During the week I commute to work if its dry on 12 miles of B rd and when I go out for a ride on rest days it always ends up off road and the 1150 is so f*cking heavy to try and pick up when its on its side up a tight Exmoor RUPP.
I also want to try and get over to the plain more often and have a bash at a rally one day.

go for it, you know you want one

Pretty much on that basis that I bought mine. Keep in mind I never even test rode it before buying it :D It does what it says on the tin. You need to learn how to brake the conventional non abs way as this could make the difference ending up in the back of a car. Besides that it is a great bike :thumb2

+1 :beerjug:

Although I was lucky to test-ride the Hp2 before I bought mine, first at the introduction on the mc-track in Valkenswaard and later for a day when my gsa had its service, I only learned two things during these rides.
The Hp2 was capable to do a lot more then my riding skills allowed me to do,
and second, although it was in no way functional for my hobby with its small fuel tank and no real luggage capability, I REALLY REALLY REALLY WANTED ONE!

Made a final decision earlier this afternoon that I ain't going to get one, its not for me, too expensive, not practical with my lad on the back and I could never do one justice. In fact I'd more than likely kill myself, it was just a bit of dreaming, bikes like that are for riders like Tim or Forry not me.

I want something that I can tinker with and get attatched too like my SE :o, I have always liked a certain bike and thought one that would be a nice garage buddy to the 1150 without breaking the bank and loosing me shed loads of cash. In the past I have done my research and I've done ok with the last few but after hours thinking and reading about them I could see myself coming unstuck with an HP2, I don't want to sell my 1150 and I like the idea of having two keepers so I made a decision and hopefully this one will work out too.

Watch this space :)

focused bike

With the exception of a few bits :blast my HP2 is stock:) What bike is perfect?? We have the option to make our bikes ideal to our own needs! I have the HPN tank on order. My Wunderlich pannier carrier and Hepco Becker panniers are still sitting in my garage uninstalled as I have not yet had the need to use them. When my long tour comes along they will be used but until then I will keep the bike as plain and simple as I can. The HP2 works best when it's light.. :rob Great to be able to go touring and leave the extra weight behind in the campsite when you want to go for a blast. You can't do that with a GS or GSA. Everyone has their needs. Mine are filled very nicly with the HP2:clap:thumb

Me too

I know what you mean Trippy. I've been following this thread too and love the look of the 'adventurised' HP2, then Dirtydog dropped in on his and I realised that the seat height was somewhere around my lower ribcage  :o :blast :thedummy :tears

I'll just go and browse the Touratech catalogue for some more 1150 GSA bits to cheer myself up now :thumb

Have you fitted a kickstart kit Snoopy? It was one of the first things I did to my DRZ as you cant bump the buggers in soft sand and the batteries are crap..

Does anyone know where i can get a kickstart for my 1150 then?

So how much does the tank on an HP2 hold then?

And whats comfortable cruising speed?

HP standard tank about 9L well in reality more like 11 but like all good things how far do you want to push it.

with the HPN tank it's about 27L so guess you could squeeze 30+ in at a push if you drill the filler neck.

as for touring speed depends if you have the road wheels fitted, and a little screen, someone was telling me they did 90+ for more than one and a half hours (braver than me...)

There are few who run on combination tyres on the offroad rims again I think you could cruise at 80 without too much bother. (However the HP is a bike which needs you to be awake and making the right decisions)

About 13 litres from memory - fuel light tends to come on at 65-75 miles depending on your riding style - so effective range to empty must be around 105 to 115 miles

What is this cruising you speak of? The bike is very comfortable at 80mph

EDIT - spec says 13 litres

I'm just trying to work out if maybe an HP2 would suit my needs better than my current 1150 gsa.

I did the morrocan dash with neil and various other bods last easter, and would like to do it again, but the prospect of having to stop for an HP2 to refuel every 5 minutes for fuel is a bit of a downer (and it would take ages to get anywhere), and if as standard it's uncomfortable above 80 then this would also be a rather significant drawback. (tyres permitting you to go faster of course!)

On the flipside salisbury plain (dirtbiking mecca maybe, and ideal for open class bikes?) is 10 minutes ride from me, and whilst my 1150 is happy trundling along in second, it isnt quite up to the previous blasts i've had on much smaller and faster bikes (a drze included, but on reflection it was a bit of a let down).

The HP2 looks ideal, ride to a rally, do the rally, then ride home again, take the panniers off and go fast trail riding, put the panniers on again and do the 200 mile trek to see my family.

Maybe it's just as case of finding a bigger HPN tank and a screen?

This is exactly why I bought my HP2 - good enough for some distance work and a whole better off-road than an 1150/1200. I haven't done any motorway work on it yet... but I've been riding a 650 Dakar for the last 12 months so I reckon it will be pretty good compared to what I'm used to.

With regards the tank - I can't speak from experience yet, but people seem to be saying that they are getting 130 out of their standard tanks which isn't too bad and personally, I don't mind a break that often.

I've run out twice, at 125 miles and at 142 miles.
When the roads are dry (ha!) I tend to fill up no later than 120 miles, but my commute is 135 miles of country A roads and I regularly do this between fills, putting about 11 litres in.
My fuel light is temporary mental and only comes on once in a blue moon.

60-70 is comfy for me, 80+ is starting to get pretty hairy...

I agree with that Stu....
Mind you i got no screen on mine and don't intend on fitting one....I want to see where i am going offroad

Last autumn in Morocco on a flatish graded piste, Rick had his HP2 up to 110mph and was holding a steady ton.
I tried it but gave up when my eyes were wobbling so much I couldn't see the track let alone the speedo, but I was slower than Rick:o...awesome:D

Makes me wish I was 25 yrs again with more nerve:rob
