Hi,

Coming back today from the 08 BMW GS Challenge at Spain, i carried my HP2 on the back of my pick up , 6 hrs ride under heavy rain.

when i arrived at home, i realize this small red light on the dash board was ON, even ignition key was removed ¡¡¡¡¡¡

The Manual says nothing about this issue. It only says that on that cockpit place there is only a day/night light sensor. ¡¡¡¡¡¡ nothing about a red light.

As a precaution, i have removed the battery and now i have it on the charger where i intend to leave it on slow charge for 10 hours.

¿any idea what this could be?

this morning i installed the battery again, already charged, an that red light was still on. well, i turn on engine, i rode the bike to work and the light turned off. It did not remain ON any more. just the regular blink when i turn on the key. even i wash the bike with the karcher.

BMW service told me that this light indicates that the illumination sensor is working. A blink is the regular test that shows the system is working ok. sometimes it remains ON, probably due to humidity on sensor.

Do you have a BMW alarm fitted?

It may have self armed on the trailer then the motion sensor tripped. The light is set to notifiy you of any alarm activity

All bollocks if you havn't got an alarm fitted:D

There is no alarm mounted on my HP2, maybe the canbus system coming from the GS1200 has a dead alarm terminal that gets wet and activates de red light....:(

The small window houses both the light sensor and the red LED that activates 1) when you first switch on the ignition and 2) when the alarm (if fitted) is armed.

I have never seen it come on when the light sensor is activated / deactivated :nenau

Last week, when walking passed my garage, I noticed mine (1200GS) was on permanantly. I went in to investigate and turned on the ignition - the display self checked ok and the side lights came on as usual but I noticed the clock was showing the wrong time. I tried to start the bike and just got a series of clunks from the starter solenoid - one very low battery :(

The battery would not initially take any charge but did eventually. However I wasn't gonna trust it so as of this weekend an Odysey has been fitted and all is now well again.

So, maybe yours is an indication of low voltage and a soon to expire battery :nenau Did you try starting the bike before taking it off to charge?

Does anyone know what this light is yet? and why it comes on?

Mine came on after 100 miles this morning. Rode a further 20 miles with it on (seems to get brighter with increased revs :nenau)
Have now turned ignition on and off a few times and started the bike. Still on.

So I've disconnected the battery 'til I set off for home tonight.

Do I need to reset anything by doing any "throttle twisting routines" after I've reconnected?

Cheers

Yup; switch on ignition but do not start the bike. Gently fully open and close the throttle a couple of times and then turn the ignition off.

Job's a good 'un

Thanks for that.

There's mention earlier in the thread that the red light is maybe an indication of a bad battery . So I've blagged a multimeter and have a healthy 12.96 volts across the battery terminals. :thumb
I also checked the current drain of the light - 0.01A (10mA ?), so would take a while to flatten the battery I guess.
