HP2 Highest Mileage/Breakages?

+ 1 it's just like that only in a modern sort of way.

8500 trouble free miles, no hint of problems with the forks, battery or side stand switch AND I do ride the beast off-road.

Having ridden John Deacon's R900RR, this is the nearest I'll ever be to having one just like it. :thumb2

It's no touring bike, but I really enjoyed taking it to the Alps last year with the street wheel fitted. It whipped every other bike in sight, even the mad Italians couldn't keep up.

As for luggage, I use the TT 80Ltr bag that goes over the seat. It can also hold two 5Ltr plastic cans of fuel, so range between stops is only limited by the quick "pit" stop to pour in another 5Ltr.

I've done over 10000 miles on mine in a little over a year. Still smiling.

Used on and off road.

I've had a few problems with the forks - new bushes, new lowers then new leg! Probably time to check them again :D

Sidestand switch hasn't been a problem - I just disconnected it.

Original battery never let me down, but with all the stories of flat batteries on here, I upgraded to an Odyssey (do a search for details).

I've had to adjust the steering head bearings once - when I get time I'll regrease (normal off road bike procedure).

The final drive gaiter, at the swingarm, half came off - bugger to get back on. Keep a close eye cos it's not obvious that it's off.

I don't like the front end on wet roads, especially braking - it's still a weighty bike for a thin 21" trail tyre.

Can't think of anything else to report really, other than that mine probably goes better with Timolgra on board :thumb

I wish:bow:bow

But if BMW made one of these for us.......:thumb

Head To Head

A comparison between the HP2 and the HPN clone

two.jpg

First the HPN clone i have rode the bike for 2500 miles now both on and off road ....It handles well, stops well goes as you would expect for a 60 Hp air head...
The only thing that has gone wrong in that distance is the rear oil seal in the bevel box ( 1100 part :augie )...
The bike performs very well off road...Very and i mean very nearly as well as the HP2 in the suspension department...If you removed the large tank and the crap off the handlebars i think it would handle just as well as the HP2 off road
I have rode standard airheads offroad and the HPN clone is vastly superior....

As for the HP2....I have only done 500 miles on it so i can't coment on the reliabilty :augie
I recon the HP2 is a ( Dirt Bike ) not a road bike and maybe thats why people who expect it to be civilized on the road soon get fedup with it's single mindedness and sell them :nenau

But i have done a few offroad :thumb2
The HP2 is a blast to ride offroad...It handles a lot better than it ought to considering the weight and no matter what gear you in or speed you are doing mayhem is ony a twist of the wrist away :green gri

It's no doubt going to be more fragile than the airhead
But the one thing it has that the airhead just can't come anywhere near is

POWER

And that's what makes the thing sooooo much fun :D

So am i going to keep the airhead....You bet
Am i glad i got the HP2...You bet
But i am sure glad i didn't buy the HP2 new due to the landslide depreciation :tears
If you are thinking of getting a HP2 for what it's designed for
Grab youself a secondhand bargain now before people realize what a bargain they really are

Who has done the highest mileage on their HP2 and what have the breakage warranty claims actually been with their particular bikes?

Has anyones HP2 been fine 'out of the box' and been perfect from day one with no leaky forkseals etc, etc.

Any info appreciated FP.:thumb

Have only coverd 11500 km no oil use or leaky forkseels was used in hp trouthey cup before purchsed bei me wondent start few times deu to gear indekator but thats no big deel when I figerd aut why it wouldent start was just a bit imbarasing at the time, cover 30000 with no probes on my gs, so dont see why this one shouldnt .have met plenty off peoplel that have coverd over 200.000 on bmw dont see why this won wont with bit of tlc

hp

Have done around 12,000 maybe a bit more or less, 10000 of that in europe. The side stand switch chucked it in, about 150kms from lleida in spain, about 200 kms from barcelona. That one stuff up cost me 785euros for a truck to get it to a bmw shop in lleida to fix a 80 euro part. Battery chucked it in 6 months ago. The bike is good stuff and i cant imagine i will ever grow out of it. Its a keeper and yes its way to expensive however, putting aside the side stand issue. i trust this bike to take me for a ride and get me home, its a simple, time proven machine that will still be running and giving pleasure long after those other P.O.S give up the ghost.
Plus it makes me smile every time i look at it. Now thats passion.

I have now done 18 000km on my HP, 80% was off-road. The HP is great :D except for the front fork coating coming off & the rear shock squeaking and the underpowered battery. Also the side stand switch was bypassed long ago!

Yes, I also bought the bike with my heart because it is a BM and a boxer :bounce1... and I know the problems will be fixed under warrantee.

Mine just clocked over 2000 miles after riding it for the last 6 weeks. Not one single day have I had a negative feeling or vibe from the bike and find myself sometimes screaming "YYYYYyyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeehhhhhhhhaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa" flying through traffic :D

I have mentioned before that my purchase of the HP2 had nothing to do with whether I could afford or ride it. It makes my heart pump chocolate and that's the way I want it. For me it is a combination of old school enduro and modern technology.

If the bike does not get used for two days I stick the optimate on the battery for safe measure. Don't know if my front forks are knackered yet and haven't checked :D The only thing I found last night after washing it :o was the grey plastic is very difficult to clean. Besides that I LOVE IT :thumb

Oh, I understand it all:thumb:)

That's just a 'Vernism' to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I could afford one, and reckon I can ride one, I have ridden one and ridden amongst several. All off road btw;)

I loved it , it's a great ride:clap but it's too unreliable, with the wrong battery fitted from new, poor design on the forks for it's weight, sidestand switches going wrong and an electrical system that doesn't allow easy repair etc etc. I don't have a local dealer close by and what happens once out of warranty.

Yes there may be a few with reasonable mileages but how much of that was doing what they were designed for.

I really wanted one and think in many ways it's my kind of bike but it has too many issues for that money, and it's charm is not strong enough to overcome them....besides I have no ego and nothing to prove:thumb

This from the "Anti-12" :rolleyes::augie

Another loada bollox being banded about, yet again about the 12...:sleep

That aside. I've had mine almost 2 weeks now and for a boxer it's stupidly quickly.

I'll be honest, I'm struggling with the suspension at the moment for road use. I'm really not sold on the rear air-shock, the rebound off it is way to quick for a rider of my weight to be comfortable with (72kg) A nice rear WP or an Ohlins would have been more welcome.

The forks are shit, to little feed-back and to weak for the bike. Plus the left fork leg is shafted.

Make no mistake, I love the bike and on the dirt it's a 'hoot' but it ain't no road bike, certainly not for me anyway. Anything over 90mph and it just wants to blow off the back and shakes me to the bone...

It's good fun on it's supermoto rims on the tight twisties, but for me, I really need to fettle the suspension more to get the best out of it. I don't know whether this is possible with it's limited front and rear...:(

Still a 'big fun bike' to ride though...:thumb

Set the rear to soft for road and dirt and get a small screen at the front - it makes a huge difference. I am probably around 10kgs heavier than you and I did have to mess around a bit with the suspension to get it to my taste but I find it very good on road now.

Also if you ride on the road quickly you need to get into the habit of using both brakes - it steadies the bike no end under very hard braking.

I've stuck a small screen on the front, it has made differnce. And I've had to learn to ride again and go back to using both brakes...:o Riding those GS's make you lazy...:D

but it's too unreliable

Really any worse than an 1150?

Pot luck I'm afraid Tim. Good and bad in all bikes whether 1150 or 1200. My 1150ADV was a pile of shite, my last 1200ADV was a peach...:thumb

Although I know where you're coming from when it comes to fixing them when compared to something like an 1100. But this can be said of all modern motors today, to technical for the average 'Joe' and cheap mass produced components knocked up in China...:(

What motors today are well built and reliable? They certainly don't come out of Germany that's a fact!
