Hugger Question

I'm thinking of fitting a Sandbar hugger - can you then remove the ugly rear "flap" over the back wheel?
Will it provide enough spray protection?

Depends.

Depends on whether you ride with panniers or not. The air swirling off the back end of the bike creates vortices which are changed with every variation.

The hugger will stop some of the shit going into your rear shock, but won't help too keep the bike clean.

There is nothing to stop you removing the rear mudguard thingy. It's not a legal requirement in UK.

I always have the top box fitted, but currently no panniers on the bike.
So if i put the panniers on does this improve the situation (i.e. less spray around?)

I don't know the answer to that. There are too many variables. Size of rider, height of rider, top box size, panniers size. Etc. The bike is not exactly steam lined.

I rode with a hugger for a while, it just concentrated the crap and road grit around the rear caliper, so I took it off. I now ride with the bike as standard. With city cases. The bike still gets covered in crap, but I don't get any concentration of road grit.

Why bother with a Sandbar hugger?

I have a black Pyramid Plastics one sat in my garage. It's in good condition and will be much cheaper than the Sandbar one

I removed mine so I could fit knobblies for a day of green laning. Couldn't be bothered to put it back on. That was 4 years ago

Thingy!

This rear thingy that was fitted to the 1150. What are your thoughts on going to Germany without it fitted as I have removed mine and planning a trip to Berlin.

According to the guy at Sandbar, the rear "thingy" is only there to reduce spray going onto vehicles behind you....
taking it off should make no difference to the amount of crud on the back of your bike.

My understanding is that it is fitted because of some German TuV regulation. What the regulation is, I have no idea.

I dare say there are loads of people who have removed them, probably many Germans included, and who have ridden their bikes in Germany without them fitted.

But the trouble is you never know if you are going to be pulled over by an anal retentive politizei, who knows the regulations inside out and would really screw your day.
